Show 136 - "Steely Dandies"

Airing Sunday, July 1 from 8-11 PM EST and Monday, July 2 from 1-4 PM EST

A special show this week, to be played by popular demand. Steely Dan is a band where you will hear a lot on the radio, but they remain one of the most appealing acts ever assembled. We'll hear 26 songs done chronological-style, then 10 of my favorites to close out the show.

The records...

(CBAT) Can't Buy A Thrill, 1972
(CTE) Countdown To Ecstacy, 1973
(PL) Pretzel Logic, 1974
(KL) Katy Lied, 1975
(TRS) The Royal Scam, 1976
(AJA) Aja, 1977
(GCH) Gaucho, 1980
(TAG) Two Against Nature, 2001
(EMG) Everything Must Go, 2003

The songs...

Do It Again (CBAT)
Midnight Cruiser (CBAT)
Fire In The Hole (CBAT)
Bodhisattva (CTE)
The Boston Rag (CTE)
King Of The World (CTE)
Rikki Don't Lose that Number (PL)
Pretzel Logic (PL)
With A Gun (PL)
Charlie Freak (PL)
Black Friday (KL)
Doctor Wu (KL)
The Fez (TRS)
Green Earrings (TRS)
Haitian Divorce (TRS)
Home At Last (AJA)
I Got The News (AJA)
FM (single)
My Rival (GCH)
Babylon Sisters (GCH)
Two Against Nature (TAG)
Gaslighting Abbie (TAG)
West of Hollywood (TAG)
Godwhacker (EMG)
Green Book (EMG)
Lunch With Gina (EMG)
Aja (AJA)
Your Gold Teeth (CTE)
Your Gold Teeth II (KL)
Josie (AJA)
Dirty Work (CBAT)
Kid Charlemagne (TRS)
The Caves of Altamira (TRS)
Don't Take Me Alive (TRS)
Night By Night (PL)
Any Major Dude Will Tell You (PL)

Hope the show brings back stories of getting in trouble and other similar memories.....next week will return to highly progged out sounds.

Thanks Rick! I still think "The Dan" could easily fit on the moon, but I'll gladly settle for a show

Hi Jeff (Balta more)! I have some pics that you're in, as soon as I get time I'll post them...only 51 more weeks to Nearfest X....

Jeff has a cool vanity plate can't remember the exact lettering but it says "Going for the One"

We've got another delivery man on the Moon by the name of Andyyyy, haven't seen him for awhile here.

Welcome in!

Re: Show 136 - "Steely Dandies"

While Steely Dan were on one of their "breaks" I used to go see a band called "Nearly Dan" who played (and still play) a great set of The Dan's music.

I do enjoy going to see tribute bands. They are, in a lot of cases, the only way we can hear the music we love played in the way we love it. Keep 'em coming.

During the show, jtmckinley mentioned either being in or wanting to be in a band called "Stealing Dan" lol.....remember the funny names of the tribute bands we saw at Summers' End? Some of them were hilarious. One of the best was "The Counterfeit Stones" and "Fleetwood Bac". About 15 years ago "Second Nature" was the best Rush band I've ever seen.

Feeling the thread morphing, hold on for the ride......

As an aside, thanks to everyone for the great response to the show. I was expecting some resistance but I underestimated the love for the Dan. That said, it will be about 5-6 weeks before I hit another tweener (BOC, Purple, Elton in the mix) or another prog spotlight (ELP is still to be done). I've got some new purchases and 2006-07 releases to hit.

Talking Re: Show 136 - "Steely Dandies"

Speaking of tribute bands, if you ever get the chance to see the Steely Dan tribute band called 'Aja', go immediately, no questions asked...wonderful spot on replications of the entire Steely Dan catalog, including many songs they never played live, or had'nt played in years....
