COTM - #160 - King Crimson Reunites

COTM - #160 - King Crimson Reunites

Great days are upon us! Robert Fripp had announced plans to reunite one of the many line-ups through the 4.5 decades of the bands existence.

The line-up is what is called the double trio format. For this reincarnation, the touring lineup includes founding guitarist Robert Fripp; drummers Gavin Harrison, Bill Rieflin and Pat Mastelotto; bassist Tony Levin, saxophonist Mel Collins; and guitarist Jakko Jakszyk.

So, to celebrate this event, I am going to play a few albums from the 80's and 90's that also came after a hiatus. The first set will be the pair of albums that came out in 1981 and 1982 called Discipline and Beat. Discipline was supposed to have been the title of the newly formed group of Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Bill Bruford and Tony Levin. But before the release of their album they all decided to resurrect the King Crimson name. The sound was new, fresh, quite alive, and had the energy of the new wave movement.

What followed next was a first for King Crimson. This same band went back into the studio together and released Beat just a year later. Never before had the band recorded two albums in a row with the same line-up. The results were equally powerful and enjoyable, as well as barrier breaking.

To me, this pair of albums are among my favorite albums from King Crimson. The two albums Discipline and Beat should almost be released as a double album because their music through-line flows seamlessly between them.

In 1984, right after the touring leg of the Three of a Perfect Pair album. The hiatus would last for almost 10 years. The third album of the night comes from the new line-up that emerged from this hiatus. This era began the double trio line-up and included Fripp, Belew, Levin from the 1980s line-up while adding Trey Gunn on Chapman Stick and Jerry Marotta on drums. The first album they released was actually an EP called
Vrooom. The full album Thrak was released in 1985 just around the time their tour began, The tour started in South America in Buenos Aires, Argentina. That first set of shows was recorded, with exceptional sound quality, and released as the live album B'Boom: Live in Argentina.

B'Boom will be our final album for this weeks show.
I hope you can join us.
