Hackers, Lamers and Script Kiddies

Unless you've been living under a rock in a dark dank cave on some remote pacific island for the past 2 weeks, you know that there were attempts to hack the Aural Moon web server. Apparently, these attempts have been ongoing for some time. I didn't take notice as I've been busy with work, family, gigs and augmenting other features of the Aural Moon web site.

Fortunately, one of the the script kiddies was a lamer -- agieagieyes. He left his footprints all over the place and corrupted an include file which tipped me and other moonies (who were on the site one evening about a week ago) off that something was amuck.

I've been mopping up for the past week. I've also stopped myriad services which we don't use but that Avian had configured when he setup the new web site. If we don't need them, why parade them about for these hackers to fiddle and diddle?

I have tightened up the router and firewall rules to thwart such attacks in the future. Only port 80 (http) is now open for incoming connections. If it wasn't, you wouldn't be here reading this forum posting or faffing in the shout box or scores of other things available here on the Aural Moon web site.

ALL OUTGOING PORT ACCESS has been removed!!! Even I cannot perform certain functions which I used to perform in the past. I must now ssh tunnel all access to the Aural Moon server.

This should also, in time, diminish the barrage of port scans and other activity wasting the bandwidth we'd all rather have for our Aural Moon activities.

So God of Pwnzage, IMHO, you're more like the Lord of Lamers.

You Go Dawg!!!!!

Thanks for all the hard and tedious work. You can't really know how much we appreciate your sacrifice for the good of the Moon.

You're the coolest and best programmer this side of the Mississippi (which in my mind extends across the big pond accross several other continents and back over the warm pond and all the way back to the west bank of the Mississippi.)

Take a small break and pour yourself a big tall one.

Huck & Tom are obviously better programmers, with some help from Becky & Jim.

I found that myspace earlier. He looks to be a lamer from that page.

Can we take turns? I'll hold him whilst you cane him and then it's my turn.

These buggers have wasted way, way, WAY too much of my brief visit on this big spinning rock.

Re: Hackers, Lamers and Script Kiddies

I do not mean to be rude at all but no amount of hardware or software or whatever is gonna prevent a hacker or hackers or lamers or script kiddies or whatever from hacking this place. It is so easy to hack a place like this. With the right amount of hardware and software and technology and knowledge this place will he hacked over and over and over again i am afraid.
Just going to have to live with the fact that we live in the new age of the hacker and there is not a lot that we can do about it i am sorry.

Well, the way these kiddies accessed the site is now no longer possible. If they can't access another system from the AM site, they cannot propagate their scripts. In addition to that, there was a backdoor. That has now been removed.

Granted, Linux is a toy. I would never put anything industrial purpose up on a linux box -- or a M$ box for that matter. However, AM is just an internet radio web site. Nobody will put up much of a fuss -- save the the regular moonies -- if it is taken off of the net.

If, and when, I get the time, I will put the AM web site up on a secure platform. A system that had security in mind and in the design from the get-go -- not a poor attempt, hacked on afterthought.

Re: Hackers, Lamers and Script Kiddies

I always thought that these Hacker pillocks had some talent that could be better used if they weren't so bored. I'm changing my mind now.

Perhaps we should just hunt them down and chop off their hands.

Are you saying that "God of the porn age" or whatever his name is/was is one of these idiots? He's been in the shoutbox a few times.

Like all the others I thank you for your hard work VAX.
