Yes, you are referring to "10 Anni Live". That's a fun set to listen to. For those that don't know, PFM were heavily influenced by King Crimson and Jethro Tull, and the first disc contains several covers which I think are every bit as good as the originals.

A minor point. On the 4th disc, there are 4 tracks post-Greg Bloch, one from the underrated Passpartout album, and the latter from their early 80s italian rock albums and introduced their 3rd and final violinist Lucio Fabbi. They didn't really need a lot from the last 2 records because "Performance" deals with those well enough, Performance being the 5th of the 5 live albums.

I was going to further comment on that 4th disc in that the title translates to "Contamination, on towards the new rock music" which is a good summary of how I saw what happened to the first incarnation of progressive rock.

In this regard what PFM did in the early 80s was really much in the same vein as what Genesis, and Yes/ELP if you count Asia did, in that they transformed themselves into a more mainstream rock band for the italian market. So Performance captures that era mostly. There is a modified version of Il Banchetto which is decent. I personally enjoy this album. In the end, the core of the band with DiCioccio, Divas, Mussida and Premoli is still there, so it's good stuff to me.

Most of Moonies love Yessongs...I love it, too.
And...although it's not prog...I love "At Fillmore East" by Allman Brothers Band.

Good choise, hobo.

And I love "Live Dead" by The Grateful Dead.
The "fuzzy" atmosphere of this album drives me away.

Re: Best Live Albums of All Time

Anyway, bonus live tracks in the studio album are sometimes good.
For example, Pentacle's "La Clef Des Songes" has some live tracks
(La Clef Des Songes, Complot, Le Raconteur) and all of them are very
aggressive and noisy and...so great, I think.

My 10 all time favorite live albums :

1. Yes - Yessongs
... nothing beats that triple gate fold album with awesome music and fantastic art to groove on
2. Camel - A Live One
3. Tangerine Dream - Encores
[tied with the equally good Tangerine Dream - Poland]
4. Frank Zappa - In New York
5. Renaissance - Live at Carnegie Hall
[tied with the Renaissance - live King Biscut Flour Hour 2 disc Set]
6. Caravan - Caravan And The New Symphonia
[Recorded live at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London, England on 28 October 1973 ... the best version of "For Richard" they have ever done]
7. Pentangle - A Basket of Light
8. Genesis - Second's Out
9. The Grateful Dead - Europe '72
10. Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

I COULD GO ON to include the Alman Brothers, ELP, and Tull and....

Good choices all and I would probably include most of them in my list too.

However I would also add:

Hawkwind - Space ritual alive
Peter Frampton - Frampton comes alive
Ted nugent - Double live gonzo

and ..................

Re: Best Live Albums of All Time

1. UFO - Strangers in the Night (Schenker was on fire)
2. Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive (Remember, this was before he was actually pop-ized)
3. REO Speedwagon - You Get What You Play For (I know, but you have to be from the Midwest of the USA to understand)
4. Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison ('Nuff said, on to #5)
5. The Band - The Last Waltz (Movie is good also)

Honorable mention: Wings - Wings Over America

Caution to all before buying any Live music from my humble opinion. 9 times out of ten you will be very disappointed.

Re: Best Live Albums of All Time

1. Exit Stage Left--Rush
2. Bursting Out--Jethro Tull
3. Seconds Out--Genesis
4. Yessongs--Yes
5. Who's Last--The Who

*I know the last one isn't normally regarded as a "classic" (or even a "good") live album. For me, its significance in entirely nostalgic.
