Discipline

I've been crowing about these guys for some time, here's the overview:

They're out of the Detroit area, and put out a neat CD called "Push and Profit" in 1993. There are some disturbing lyrics (see "The Nursery Year"), but the music is riveting. I saw them soon after at "Progscape" in Baltimore. When I saw them after their second release, I was completely blown away. Their lead singer, Matthew Parmenter, has a commanding stage presence.

I've seen them at progday in 100 degree heat - a magnificent set, at Orion (there's a fabulous live record from that show). You can hear us yelling between tunes. The liner notes for that are weird as hell. I've also seen them three other times. One time was at the Mask & Wig club at the Univ of Penn - Always Almost (the Echolyn offshoot) opened up for them - Matthew's face paint had melted in the heat (it was soooo hot in there), that when we spoke with him after the gig, he looked like Gabriel on the third record. It was surreal. The show I saw outside of DC was a double bill with Anekdoten on their Nucleus tour. WOW. their guitarist had to get back to Detroit for a job interview the next day - the ills of a non-commercial band.

The second (and unfortunately) last studio release in 1977 is unquestionably my favorite album since then. Each song is absolutely incredible. The versions on the Orion CD are almost as good. the first track (Canto IV-Limbo) is so powerful. The whole record is just balls-out incredible.

I am very loath to rate something prior to listening (either good or bad), but I can't help myself on this one.

Let me know what you all think.

Need to hear it!

I've looked high and low all over the net and have found nothing. How can I get some samples or will AM add it to the list?

I ordered it once, but it was out of stock. I'll be trying again soon...

Question for RnR: You mention a 1993 release, and if I read your post correct, a later 1977 release? Huh? Are these guys time travelers as well? Could you explain for those of us who are chronologically impaired?

Thanks!

these things are hard to get, aren't they? Getting that and "As the World" would be a major coup.

I made the same error on my resume about dates - no wonder it's taking me so long! All due to going too fast - I'm sorry, P&P is 1993, and Unfolded is 1997.

They're musically incredible, but I'm not ready to canonize tham as time travellers!

I'll check a few more sites and add to the list as/if I find them.

Well, I will be disappointed if I don't like it - and I might be a bit slower to grab the next CD you suggest - but that's part of the fun of this job. Before I started doing this, it was very rare for someone to turn me on to a new band. Believe me, I enjoy the thrill of new discoveries.

Well, I've received Discipline's "Unfolded...", and I have to say it's pretty darn good. That's on one listen, and there's a depth and edge to this record that I suspect will make it grow on me. Even on first listen, there's some serious content to the lyrics (a 14 minute song based on one canto of Dante's Inferno?!), and the band is a pretty tight outfit. Musically it's complex, and fairly unique. The closest comparison I can think of is Gentle Giant, but they really don't sound anything like them. Just something about the counterpoint and phrasing that's reminiscent. Decent vocalist too.

Good recommendation, and look for it on the playlist soon.

Nice

Glad to hear it!

A few addendums:

The vocalist writes it all and is a very riveting stage presence. On the Push + Profit record, there's a disturbing tune about a pyschotic child molester set to a very beautiful tune, and on the Live At Orion, the liner notes are just plain warped.

I wish they were still together because the live experience won me over, too.

Psst

very happy to see that Unfolded Like Staircase has been a well-requested addition. Just wanted to say that "Push and Profit" and "Live At Orion" are awesome too.
