I was right...and I wish I wasn't
In an older Rush thread I mentioned that Vapor Trails had some great tunes but the sound was horrible. I am no technician, but I hope I have a decent ear.
Well Zvinki sent me this article and boy does it ring true. This is one of the most dead-on articles I have ever seen. Thanks z, for confirming that...and after reading it, I also assign some of the blame to the band. http://www.prorec.com/prorec/article...256C2E005DAF1C |

to my ears, "Test For Echo" suffers from the same audio fate AND the songwriting is weaker. Again, this is strictly my opinion your mileage may vary blah blah blah

Phenomenal article. There's two other considerations he didn't mention. First is the label's error of mastering for the radio. Labels know better than to master for radio if the band isn't a radio band. They know a new Rush lp won't be on the radio very much at all, so they don't master it with that consideration. That's a mistaken assumption by the article's author in my estimation. Secondly, I think that "heavy" wasn't the only factor, but "raw." Rawness is something they were aiming for because Rush is known as a polished band as of late (think synth) and this was Rush's first keyboardless album since the first one. So they mastered accordingly.
I'd like this guy to look at the production differences between KX's "Please Come Home... Mr. Bulbous" and "Manic Moonlight."

Bulbous, whether you like the music or not, sounds amazing. Moonlight is not really a bad sound, as much as it's different. I read that Ty purposefully went for different tones with the bass and the guitar because of the several overt funk songs. But that didn't work as well for something like "Jenna" or "The Other Side." But some of it is in the recording. Doug's bass tone on "Yeah" is absolutely dome through his rig.

Yet another thread degenerating into a KX discussion.

King's X is a three piece hard rock band that is well-respected by musicians. They are one of my favorite bands, even though Spaz likes them Bob Lentil is also a fan, and even PDJ has some King's X. They have 10 studio records (wow I though there was more) and I have them all. Would you like some? |
