Save Net Radio Campaign

SaveNetRadio Artists Rock Congress
Capitol Concert Carries Message of Music Diversity to Law Makers

WASHINGTON D.C. – After holding an open-air concert on the lawn of the United States Senate last night, Members of the SaveNetRadio coalition visited Capitol Hill again today to gather support for legislation pending in the House and Senate. Thirty-one artists traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with more than 50 lawmakers today to discuss the importance of Internet radio and the threat a March 2nd ruling by the Copyright Royalty Board poses to the future of net radio and the artists it supports.
“The fight to preserve music diversity on the Internet is as much about artists and listeners as it is about webcasters,” said SaveNetRadio spokesperson, Jake Ward. “Artists understand that the future of Net radio is at stake, and they recognize that that if Net radio dies, artists will lose a valuable tool for promoting their music and finding new fans. The only viable solution is to establish a fair system that supports well-earned compensation for artists who create music and a sustainable business model for webcasters playing that music. More than 6,000 individual artists and bands have joined the SaveNetRadio coalition and the fight to save Internet radio from the unprecedented and illogical March 2nd royalty rate increase imposed by the Copyright Royalty Board. The SaveNetRadio coalition and its partners appreciate the time and energy these artists have dedicated to come to Washington to speak with Members of Congress today, and we encourage more artists that benefit from Internet airplay to follow their example.”

The Internet Radio Equality Act , H.R. 2060/S. 1353 was introduced by Representative Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL) in the House and Senators Ron Wyden (D-O and Sam Brownback (R-KS) in the Senate. This legislation would vacate the Copyright Royalty Board’s decision and set a 2006-2010 royalty rate at the same level currently paid by satellite radio services (7.5% of revenue.) as well as change the royalty rate-setting standard used in royalty arbitrations so that the standards applying to webcasters would align with the standard that applies to satellite radio royalty arbitrations.

Re: Save Net Radio Campaign

I'm curious as to how much the monthly/yearly member support costs would since we listeners will end up paying the royalties as well as the 128 k servers. I feel the $50/year has been worth it and hope that there are enough of us to keep this afloat for a while longer!

Webcasters to Go Silent in Protest of Royalty Rate Increase
Millions of Internet Radio Listeners Urged to Defend the Future of Net Radio

WASHINGTON D.C. - Thousands of U.S. webcasters plan to turn off the music and go silent this Tuesday, June 26, to draw attention to an impending royalty rate increase that, if implemented, would lead to the virtual shutdown of this country's Internet radio industry.

"The arbitrary and drastic rate increases set by the Copyright Royalty Board on March 2nd threaten the very livelihood of thousands of webcasters and their millions of listeners throughout the country," said Jake Ward, a spokesperson for the SaveNetRadio Coalition. "The campaign to save Internet radio - a genuine grassroots movement comprised of hundreds of thousands of webcasters, artists and independent labels, and Net radio listeners - has quickly brought this issue to the national forefront and the halls of Congress, but there is still more to be done before the approaching deadline of July 15th. On Tuesday, thousands of webcasters will call on their millions of listeners to join the fight to save Internet radio and contact their Congressional representatives to ask for their support of the Internet Radio Equality Act."

Many webcasters are planning to shut off access to their streams entirely, while other webcasters plan to replace their music streams with long periods of silence (or static or ocean sounds or similar) interspersed with occasional brief public service announcements on the subject.

Internet-only webcasters and broadcasters that simulcast online will alert their listeners that "silence" is what Internet radio may be reduced to after July 15th, the day on which 17 months' worth of retroactive royalty payments -- at new, exceedlingly high rates -- are due to the SoundExchange collection organization, following a recent Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) decision.
