Best Live Albums of All Time

Listening to a cut from PULSE by Pink Floyd this morning has garnered the though of what are the best ever live albums.

My candidates include the following:

1. YesSongs - Yes
2. Pulse - Pink Floyd
3. Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East
4. Welcome to the show... - ELP
5. Peter Frampton Comes Alive

That's my top five of the ones I can think of right now. What's in your top five?

Band of Gypsies - Jimi Hendrix
Live at Leeds - The Who.
Nightwatch (Live) - King Crimson (that brought us Lament and Fracture)

Re: Best Live Albums of All Time

Seeing a lot of shows, I tend to shy away from a lot of live records. But some get a lot of play because of personal rememberances.

Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous

Bought this when I was 15, hanging out at a local Korvettes, they were playing it in the store BM (Before Musak!). It's a perfect live record.

Speaking of Korvettes, here's an example of "putting lipstick on a pig" (a current events tem):

Grand Funk - Caught In the Act

The first live record is the epitome of hippiness, this one has the keyboards and some spirited versions.

Frampton Comes Alive - of course...

The Nearfest lives of Izz and Hackett are great. No more jump out into the top group, but I'm sure there are more.

Re: Best Live Albums of All Time

I would include Lou Reed's "Rock N Roll Animal" to the others listed above and maybe "Woodstock"....

kevishev, I almost include R&R animal just for the best dual guitar intro song on a live album.

Re: Best Live Albums of All Time

I can agree with all but a few I've seen, probably only because I've never heard 'em. Here's two gems that I've not seen though;

1. Little Feat - Waiting For Columbus
2. Humble Pie - Rockin The Fillmore

David Bowie - David Live (1974)

But to mention a live track
Hotel California - Eagles from Hell Freezes Over (1994) It still makes all the hairs on my neck stand up and take notice. (nowadays the hairs on my back as well )

PFM released 5 other official "live" recordings besides Cook (a.k.a. Live in USA). The 3 most recent releases in 1998 (www.pfmpfm.it (il Best)
), 2002 (Live in Japan) and 2004 (Piazza del Campo) are incredible for any PFM fan. The band's energy always comes across to me in their recordings. If you are a Mauro Pagani fan, the Piazza del Campo recording is incredible.

Cheers,
Carl
