Re: Captain Beyond
hey rick-
it wouldn't offend me in the least if you had led zep, the who, deep purple, procol harem, the moodys on the playlist! it'd be very difficult to point to where progressive and these bands diverged. led zep not progressive? they may not be prog... we heard all this stuff on college radio in the 70's, along w/ tunes like "time has come today" by the chambers brothers, "the revolution will not be televised" by gil scott heron, firesign theatre comedy, the nat lamp radio hour, even early synth stuff like "snowflakes are dancing" by tomita. freeform radio w/o the genre box. seriously, you don't know what you missed. k

Re: Captain Beyond
Depends what you mean by "prog".
Many definitions today. William, i'll give this name to my son if i ever got one one day. William Bruford said that progressive rock is not a vulgar tag. And Steve Howe talks about a kinda eternal wave. Rock upgrades, i.e. it is progressive. But it's not dying, and too many rock bands of all sort, even hard rock bands, enjoy using "rock is dead", "rock is dying" within the lyrics. But if there is any rocker, let's say that Neil Young himself said rock and roll will never die. I say noone should worry about rock's end. cause it'll allways be, and the longer the better. Now, the term progressive used means the bands called as progressive rock bands are the one to listen to in order to go beyond rock i.e. to take a slow ride through life after the glauque punk. Not death. |

Mick Abrahams formed them on leaving Jethro Tull after "This Was". Lots of Jazzy overtones from the Sax and Flute playing of Jack Lancaster. Excellent first two albums. Mick still plays occaisionally on the gig circuit here and is always worth seeing. After "Pig" Mick got together "The Mick Abrahams Band" and released a couple of albums. I seem to remember Rick playing "Seasons" from one of those during an early show of his. |

Re: Captain Beyond
I LOVED the first Capt Beyond..uh?.............ALBUM!!! I still put one of their songs on my "Mixed 70's" CD collections. I just can't remember the name of it. Another band from the 70's I loved, that I don't hear much about was: Three Man Army. That was Adrian Gurvitz and, I think his brother. They were an offshoot from the band....GUN (no pun intended) Gun was pretty wild too.
