Re: Compilation Sym-Rock

Miles Davis - Concierto de Aranjuez (Rodrigo)

If you include songs that life classical then Yes' "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed," "Astral Traveller," and most of Tales is classically derived. Lot of Stravinsky.

Thanks Yesspaz!!! As for the other suggestions: "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed" - composer R. Havens & "Astral Traveller" - J. Anderson.
The thing is... that I don't think "classically derived" will work, for in that case... all ELP or Trace discography will easely fit in! I want to keep the compilation in the "cover" area, and not in an "influences" one... Thanks again!!!

Re: Compilation Sym-Rock

Anekdoten : Mars original from The planets by Host on Progday 94 CD2 on Muséa fnch label
King Crimson : Mars same references on the CD BOX Epitaph ( not sure of the title of the box)
Arena :Rossini's William Tell overture opening track from the live CD Welcome to the stage
Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe ; An evening of Yes music plus : I think the opening track of the first CD is from a classic opus " Benjamin Britten's young person's guide to the orchestra" but I may be wrong, it could be a tribute to Benjamin Britten ?
After Crying : Mendelsssohn's Pilgrim's March on the Struggle for life CD
Barrock : Bellini's La norma ( opera) on thier title GUerra! ( WAR!) from the CD Oxian 5SI MUsic 1994 Italian prog band)
IQ : Glenn MIller's medley on NIne in a pond is here
Peter Hammill and GUy Evans :Barber's adagio for strings( arrangement by William Strickland) do you remember Platoon's end ? :-)
Höstsonaten ( Finisterre's offshot) on their eponym first Cd there is a tracl entitled Rime of ancient mariner lyrics by Samuel Taylor Coleridge ( 1772/1834) . Is it simply a text or does a piece of music exist?
BArrock : on their CD La strega there is a track from an obscure Italian Composer named GIovanni Pierluigi DA Palestrina ( XVI century) the original piece is a mottet for 4 voices
Johansson Bjorn ( with Pär Lindh's help): Mozart ( two bars !) on Discus Unis Rhapsody

That's all for today ;-)

The Ancient Mariner has been set to music (Iron Maiden, Bedford (new age/rock), Newbury ('modern' classical), more I think), but the Hostsonaten version is a separate and excellent work.

The Maiden is just a 14 minute epic that talks about the poem. Like Rush's "Xanadu". There's no orchestration. They've got a song about Alexander the Great, etc also. Steve Harris (bassist) is a history buff.

They're one of the few hard rock acts that rarely sing about getting tail. Refreshing!

Ok. The Miles is definitely a "cover" if you can call it that. The Yes one's I listed are sort of half-covers. "Astral Traveller"'s middle section is a flat out (I think) Stravinsky piece, though I don't know which one. I'll try to think of others.

I know that Metallica has done Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War." (and it features prominenly in "The Devil's Triangle" by KC.
