"And it's all free (unless your nickname is VAXman.)" I like to contribute every once in a while with the odd $$$s or CDs. I, like a lot of others do what I can when I can....every little helps I hope. |

Re: History of Aural Moon (Part 1)
Hey, we already have 1 "wild K" around here!
Wow, It's hard to believe it's been 3 years since the party! Anyone want to play "Name that tune" for CDs ? LOL! I can say i've been a fixture since before Dot joined...! Rick, Keithie and i all joined around the same time. I'm just not nearly as verbose I have to say, it totally made my day (month, year) when you added my stuff to the playlist. I listen back now and cringe. Everything's improved, the equipment, the experience level... the players...big announcement coming soon regarding the new project, "Future Kitchens of America". I'll be playing "mad scientist" primarily on this one, staying out of the way of some incredible players, including a first chair violinist from the Catalonian Philharmonic...! ('told you it was big!) Kirk

Re: History of Aural Moon (Part 1)
Davin, I think it's quite cool that you were a user of the Rev's MP3 service. I haven't seen that mentioned in years. I sent him quite a bit of stuff for it back in 1999. I didn't have much dedicated web space at the time so I'm pretty sure I burned and mailed him a CDR. At one point he got concerned about the legality of it (I always considered it "radio"-like what being one song per band, which is why I sent him stuff in the first place) and he took a lot of it down.
I joined Aural Moon in early 2003. Of the current shows I think only Gags predated me. I spent a lot of time ripping stuff from vinyl to MP3; a single two hour show could have as much as 15 hours of prep work. That's the main reason I've had difficulty keeping it going unfortunately, but I would like to improve my attendance over the next few months so I can hit the 5 year anniversary with some momentum. Regards, Sean

Re: History of Aural Moon (Part 1) -- The View from Dr. Dot
A VERY interesting thread. I'm glad it was asked. This place as a rich history that I managed to glom on to the first time I spotted it.
I stumbled upon Aural Moon in mid 2001, but didn't really become involved with the community until 2003, right as CNN was 'right-sizing', and I DESPERATELY needed something to keep my mind occupied. I initially started as a listener, along with being the occasional shoutbox poster. I was in the Chat box when Avian and ProgDirJim were talking. It became obvious to me that another set of hands was necessary to help things along. I wasn't in the best of places financially, but one thing I *COULD* do was offer up my 1337 teqnikl $k1llz up as needed. Davin gave me a brief tour of the station (as it were), and showed me some of the intricacies involved with SAM the Elder (including the evil CPU munching bug that nearly drove me to drink). Library cleanup was necessary, and work needed to be done. Avian showed a lot of faith in what was essentially a stranger offering to take care of his Baby(TM). I like to think that his trust was in no way misplaced. Anyway, I took on the job of making sure that the new music was installed, that it played right, sounded good, and played well with the web page. Then I graduated to general tech support for the user base, assisting people in doing what they wished without bringing the system down, etc. As time went on, and I took on a graveyard shift job, I was able to do a lot of the after hours work. But such blessings(?) rarely last (fortunately or unfortunately will be left as an exercize to the reader). I knew I was gonna need a hand, and I knew where to find it. We'd been trading various anti Microsoft barbs, and I, being a geek through and through, am always looking for better ways of operating computers (VMS being one of them). The rest, as they say, is history. I've enjoyed most of the time I've spent around these hallowed rooms. There are definitely exception, but those are VERY few and widely disbursed. Avian's managed to pull together one hell of a team here. Roger -Dot- Lee

Re: History of Aural Moon (Part 1)
This was so cool to read through! It's interesting how the moon has come about and become the place that it is. I've only been here a little over a week I think but I love it here. The music is fantastic, the selection vast and some of the nicest, most welcoming people I've ever come across online. Everyone here for the most part was so friendly when I first joined and so willing to share their prog knowledge which I greatly appreciate. There are some here who instantly felt like family
Thanks Davin, Jim, Roger, Vax and everyone else who contributes in their own way to keeping this fantastic site going! |

Re: History of Aural Moon (Part 1)
The Internet Archive, via its Wayback Machine, provides an interesting opportunity to look at the past of the Moon (and many other places on the web, of course). Check out some of the snapshots of this website:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://auralmoon.com/ Look at the entries from 2001 for example: The site looks quite different from what it is today. Also, if you check some of the more recent entries, you can see some old shoutbox messages, among others. (Some patience is needed with that service: It seems to be rather slow these days, at least for me.) Last edited by Methem : 01-16-2011 at 04:54 AM. |

Re: History of Aural Moon (Part 1)
I first joined in 2004 and had to leave for a year before returning again in 2006 as spewie, The Moon has enriched my musical life in ways that I could have never dreamed of, and because of this site I have found a whole new appreciation for progressive music again, as Avian mentioned the 80's were a pretty sad period for Progressive music so it is wonderful that he and the dedicated moon team were able to help in its renaissance. Thank you to all the great folks who run this site as well as to all the listeners who make this station happen, I consider you all my friends

Re: History of Aural Moon (Part 1)
2002, broken leg, bicycling race, and I remember those days after surgery, boring, I found AM in iTunes...it was a big surprise to listen music that I was listening for years but bigger than that it was found new music., new musicians.
Never visited AM site until 3 or 4 years after that, main reason maybe I could see what is on air through iTunes window. Can 't believe, almost ten years ago. Still I asking myself why did it take me too long to visit the site. Just late 2006 I started to follow it, news and more music..with a small notebook, still it is, and looking at shyly those nicknames talking. Early 2007 I guess I had my kind of prog baptism with my nickname and first hello in speakeasy. Phenomenal project, addictive, great music, great people, friends, life is better, richest here. Thank you so much. |
