COTM - #266 - Magellan
Greetings prog lovers.
This week we play homage to Trent Gardner, who along with his brother Wayne, Co-founded the San Francisco bay band Magellan. Trent recently passed away suddenly on June 11. His brother had also passed in 2014. They began in 1984, releasing their first material in 1991. Trent was still working on projects up to his passing, including a new album. It is unclear how much of that project he completed and if anyone may try to complete it posthumously. What I will feature this week are a pair of cuts from the debut album, Hour of Restoration (1991), and their 2nd album, Impending Ascension (1993). I will also intersperse a few covers, singles and a lost track from their website throughout the playlist. The main feature will be a new addition to the moon in their 3rd album from 1997 entitled Test of Wills. It was the only album missing from their discography on Aural Moon. The sound of Magellan is classic symphonic prog influenced by the grand masters. That shows in the heavily layered symphonic keyboards. It is, however, balanced by very heavy guitar. Enough heavy guitar to really call the group progressive metal. Come join us honor Trent and Wayne Gardner of Magellan.
