I have to agree with Suite for the Everyman. At nearly 50 mins, Mei gets to be tedious.

Mei gets tedious way before the 50 minute mark. But Pink Floyd - Echoes tops that, as it gets tedious before it even gets started! The most overrated prog piece ever. (No offence) I'm with Vax on Atom Heart Mother...

Karn Evil 9 (live at least) features one of Greg Lake's best leads, before the break into "welcome back my friends"

I think Gazric's point was one song for EACH band (yikes!), so let's hear some suggestions from lesser known bands.

Djam Karet - The Sky Opens Twice - contains the ripping intro, then segues (admittedly not so gracefully) into the more ambient side of their music

Crucible - they only put out two records!
Dregs - I'm Freaking Out, or Hereafter
Kansas - not a bad choice....
Magenta - Gluttony, but Witch is prob better

Focus - Hamburger Concerto
(I like Peter's Brick choice)

and

Greg Howard - Water on the Moon

I don't believe it matters how many records they put out. If I may quote the original premise of this thread "...one representational track from every progressive band that has ever put finger to mellotron or guitar...."

Good Focus Cut!
And equally good Dregs cuts as well.

Re: Survival bag

Okay, Jon Anderson will be represented several times - Yes, ABWH, & work with Vangelis.

However, he has to have a solo effort as well. That has to be:

Olias of Sunhillow
But which cut?

Moon Ra/ Chord / Song of Sea
or
QoQuaQ En Transic / Naon / Transic To
or
Ocean Song / Meeting

I'd have to sneak the whole thing on myself. But alas, someone must choose.
