Squire Speaks

The page http://www.bradenton.com/2011/03/10/...rst-album.html

the text:
This summer, enthusiasts of the progressive rock band most famous for the singles “Roundabout” and “Owner of a Lonely Heart” should finally have fresh product.

“At the moment, we just finished recording our first studio album since 2001,” Chris Squire said during a phone interview last week. “It will probably be ready by July of this year.”

The bassist, songwriter, cofounder and only group member to appear on every Yes album said the new one would be called “Fly From Here.”

“It’s the title of the main song,” he said.

Squire also confirmed longtime Yes collaborator Trevor Horn produced the album. The players, Squire continued, would be the same one attendees will see on stage when the band performs Friday at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg:

Guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Oliver Wakeman, lead singer Benoit David and Squire.

Except for one change.

At Horn’s insistence, “Fly from Here” will feature his former Buggles and Yes band-mate Geoffrey Downes on keyboards, as opposed to Wakeman, Squire said.

“We have no exact date and the album is not even mastered yet,” Yes’ publicist responded via e-mail. “So unfortunately we have no information yet but was told it would be out sometime in July.”

Don’t expect any “Fly From Here” songs Friday.

“We won’t be doing any new music on this tour,” Squire said. “But we will on the big tour that will come on the back of the new album.”

The Jannus Live performance will include music from albums such as “Drama,” “Fragile,” “Close to the Edge” and “90125,” reads publicity material. “Roundabout” and “Owner of a Lonely Heart” are “sure to be featured for an evening of music not to be missed.”

Yes’ brand of technical virtuosity, symphonic enhancements and often fanciful lyrics peaked in popularity a few years after the first lunar landing.

But Yes’ fan-base grew rapidly in the years following the band’s 1969 self-titled release and those original vinyl-buyers have remained loyal.

Pretty impressive.

Especially for a group that has undergone about as many lineup changes as Guns ’N’ Roses.

“A combination of a bit of talent and a bit of luck,” Squire joked when asked about his band’s decades of success.

As for his status as the only member of Yes to appear on every album, he remarked, in a similar lighthearted manner, “It was more by default than design.”

Back in ’68, Squire formed Yes with original vocalist Jon Anderson in London. They shared a simple goal: a band that had instrumental chops and strong lead, as well as harmony and vocals.

“To get both those things going, that was it,” Squire said. “That’s what we were working toward and I think that’s what we achieved.”

Squire and Anderson last performed together in 2004 before Yes went on hiatus through ’08.

A reunion of the two original Yes men might happen.

But don’t expect it anytime soon.

“I don’t see why not,” Squire said. “That door is always open.”

He added, “But that would be something to look into two or three years from now.”

POSTERS NOTE: (TheFish) If they did re-unite 3-4 years from now, how would all those wheelchairs fit on stage?
