COTM - #188 - Zappa Meets Mogul Thrash
COTM - #188 - Zappa Meets Mogul Thrash
Happy Holidays Moon Walkers. It's this time of year, with the overly sweet cheer in the air and the rank commercialism gets juuuuuuuuuuuussst a little under my skin. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the current and upcoming holidays (Happy Hanukkah - The Festival of Lights), but about this time I just need to get a little irreverent to balance all things out. And lucky you, you get to be my spoil for my irreverence. Well, what better way to go than the Zappa Family. I have two 'new to you' (or at least new to the Moon) pieces. One is Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention. It was released in 1985 in deference to the lobby group PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) that was working to force record companies to label offensive material. And we all know how he felt about our 1st amendment. The 2nd album is another new to the moon album. It was originally released in 1971 and was produced by Brian Auger, who also plays on one track. The band is a who's who of early progressive rock groups with ties to Colosseum and Eclection prior to the band forming. Then the affiliations after they broke up were King Crimson, Family, and the Average White Band. The band members were James Litherland on guitar (Colosseum), Michael Rosen on Trumpet (Eclection), Malcolm Duncan and Roger Ball on Saxaphones (would become "Dundee Horns" and become part of Average White Band), Bill Harrison on percussion, and ex-Splinter bassist John Wetton. The sound is a harder version of the sound of groups like Chicago, BS&T, Lighthouse, Chase, etc. James Litherland could give Terry Kath a small run for the money, but lets face it, Kath was A-Mazing! This might put them in the more Proto-Prog category but here's my irreverent self including them in our genre. I must admit that I did not find this group. It was brought to my attention by my buddy John (cpljohn to you). Thanks my friend. Lastly, the show will be topped off with portions of the 1st CD of Dweezil Zappa's Zappa Plays Zappa dvd. There wasn't time for all of it, but I suspect I may feature the other 2 discs sometime in the future. The songs seem to cover the earlier part of Frank's discography, for the most part. It will cover some of the favorites. Well, I hope you have fun joining in for a little irreverence. Come on, try it. You'll Like it! d
