Prog Metal

I'd like to listen in Auraumoon some of the best prog metal band: Iron Maiden and Queensryche.
From hard rock, "(Music From) The Elder"'s Kiss is a great prog album too! Please, put it on set!

I disagree, Vax. I don't believe it's an oxymoron so much as the quality equivalent of Hen's Teeth or Honest Politicians. It's very difficult to come by, extremely rare, and easy to do badly. LTE and (to a somewhat lesser extent) Dream Theater are good examples of Prog Metal.

And only to a limited degree.

And I really need to edit my signature here. I'd love to dive in and help again when needed, but I would't call myself second in command of anything anymore. Perhaps Tertiary Geek in the Hole? Can fix it if it's not TOO esoteric?

I'm sure something will come up.

Re: Prog Metal

I like both Iron Maiden and Queensrÿche, they have many songs that would suit AM very well - most folk would not even notice.

However, considering how dividing this kind of bands can be, it is probably best to keep them at bay. For me, Aural Moon is mostly about discovering bands and artists I am not aware of, if some big names are missing I do not mind.

As a compromise, admins could opt for an abridged play list from these bands, e.g. selecting progressive songs such as "Empire Of The Clouds" and "The Red And The Black" from the latest Iron Maiden LP. SAM's rules would avoid any fangirl/boy from playing them to oblivion. But then again, I am not really upset if they chose not to do so.

P.S.: Vax, you just redefined the meaning of "caustic"

Re: Prog Metal

'prog metal' could sound ok to me only considering there are in progressive music some patterns..especially guitar riffs..drums patterns ...taken from metal.
and I say vice versa
metal bands have been incorporating more melodic ideas what in my opinion is the main or greatest weakness in metal music..besides another things I do not like actually.
anyway
I think Maiden or Queensryche belong another place,, if you add them..door is open for many bands with credits to be here too. Line is thin and subjective maybe.

I've been working with him so long that our various values of 'caustic' are starting to counteract each other.

Re: Prog Metal

Queensryche at least deserves a debate, but Iron Maiden? Outside this thread, has anyone EVER accused them of being prog?

Iron Maiden is a regular debate at ProgArchives. Some years back it was accepted in the prog-related category and now it has 3 LPs with ratings over 4 (with SIT not far off).

In the latest big discusion on this matter a few folk proposed Iron Maiden to be moved on to the proto-prog category:

Whether one considers this to be a prog band or not one thing is sure: they seem to be pretty popular among prog fans.

Cheers.

Just my 2 cents. There is more than enough metal on AM already. We don't need any more, especially marginally prog bands like these.

One could obviously say the same thing about Neo Prog (or any other genre for that matter). It is all a matter of taste.

When I want to listen to progressive metal, I just pull out the cd and put it in the player.

Re: Prog Metal

Gee! What a bunch of B.S. and lots of empty theories. It's not about labels. It's about music and.... oh f*. I give up. Let's rip out of AM and forget Rush, Wishbone Ash, Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery, Lana Lane, etc. They are not pure enough to deserve to play at AM. Let's listening just the "pure" progressive rock.

Yikes. Harsh. Sometimes you listen to music because (dare I say) it sounds good and you like it?

Yea, strange theory indeed.

Smile Re: Prog Metal

Hi Space: It's not a question on labels, purity or something else. AuralMoon has a clear identity on progressive rock as it is, I mean, you know what it is all about. You like Iron Maden & Queensryche ? That's ok, up to you, they have occupied some place in my players long ago, but not now. I love some The Who's works that the administrators refuse to include, and we have discussed and I gave up. No problem at all, I understand the arguments, both pro & against. Ont thing I know: being an enthusiastic fan of IM & Queensryche, I bet you own most (if not all) their CDs. So it's not necessary for you to turn it on AM when you want to listen to them. Do it yourself.
Hugs !
