Desolation

Biography from their official website

From left to right: Francis Grégoire (Keyboards), Gabriel Antoine Vallée (Vocals/Guitars), Philippe Pouliot (Drums),
Dominic Tapin-Brousseau (Bass), Gabriel Cyr (Guitars)

At first, the members of the band were Gabriel Cyr (guitars), Francis Grégoire (keyboards), Philippe Pouliot (drums) and Dominic Tapin-Brousseau (bass). Playing a couple of instrumental original songs as well as progressive song covers, the band members quickly became close to each others and shared the same vision for the project's future. It was clear to everyone that a singer would eventually complete the formation. After a couple auditions, Gabriel Antoine Vallée joined the band in 2012 to officially form Universe Effects. Two years of composition and hard work followed for them to finally record their first album In the Haze that Surrounds Us, presenting a progressive rock/metal music with a touch of epic.

Influences : Dream Theater, Rush, Liquid Tension Experiment, Planet X, Freak Kitchen, Symphony X, Steven Wilson, Transatlantic, Spock’s Beard, Yes, Porcupine Tree, Andromeda, Ark, Hans Zimmer, John Williams and many others ...

UNIVERSE EFFECTS
Progressive Metal • Canada
Universe Effects Biography

Founded in 2012, Quebec based act UNIVERSE EFFECTS perform an epic and theatrical style of progressive metal with influences pertaining to bands such as DREAM THEATER and RUSH but also incorporating certain aspects of groups such as Porcupine Tree into their overall sound. Beginning as an instrumental outfit consisting of Gabriel CYR on guitar, Francis GREGORY on keyboards, Philippe POULIOT on drums and Dominic TAPIN-BROUSSEAU on bass, the band's chemistry immediately gelled, and the desire for a vocalist eventually resulted after numerous auditions with the addition of Antoine Gabriel VALLEY into the fold, who also performs acoustic guitar. After two years of writing and practicing, the act recorded their first full length album entitled ''In The Haze That Surrounds Us'', which was released in February of 2015. Highly melodic yet intricate in nature, their music features strong interplay between guitars and keyboards while retaining heaviness with their tight rhythm section.

Universe Effects .... yet another Canadian band of value
and with excellent future prospects
The band has so far done almost a few concerts in Quebec,
one in Montreal and one in Toronto
They should leave their area ... they have the characteristics to be able to impose themselves on a much wider public
Universe Effects is classified as Progressive Metal ... but my advice is to listen to them and if you like Dream Theater but not only ...
you'll love Universal Effects

Re: Desolation

Very good album. The only fault is the same all prog bands seem to fall to these days is the opening 'prelude' track. Adds nothing to the album. Unnecessary and a waste of effort. That said, Good job!

For those who want to learn more
about the Universe Effects,
I have collected some material and videos.

all this material highlights that the Universe Effects are above all
Gabriel Cyr and Francis Grégoire, two artists that I am sure
will capture the attention of many in the coming years,
but this does not mean that the rest of the formation is irrelevant
in the realization of their compositions.

Published 9 Oct 2018
Since April, we’ve been on the hunt for the best amateur guitarists
around the world, to see who should be crowned Guitarist of the Year 2018. The live final was held at the UK Guitar Show on Saturday 29 September.
Hundreds of entry videos were submitted, before standout performances
were sent to star judges Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert and Mark Tremonti.
The three finalists were then judged at the show itself by Total Guitar, Guitarist, Guitar Techniques and MusicRadar editors, as well as
Simon McBride. Gabriel Cyr was crowned the winner
at the PRS-sponsored event.
In addition to the prestigious title, Gabriel walked away with a
beautiful PRS USA Custom 24 in McCarty Sunburst and a one-year
Ernie Ball string endorsement, among other fantastic prizes.

3 videos by Gabriel Cyr

2 of a Gabriel Cyr that you don't expect ...
and an alternative guitar solo version of a song taken from their latest album Desolation

Travel Memories - Gabriel Cyr

Gabriel Cyr : I am currently doing a Master Degree in Jazz Interpretation at Laval University. I composed this piece in the context of a creation project in which I explore different instruments less common in jazz. I have always appreciated the sound of the cello and I felt it was a good match for this melody.

Musicians:
Tomohisa Toriumi – Cello
François Moisan - Electric Bass
Olivier Bussières – Drums
Gabriel Cyr - Jazz Guitar

Violin Sonata No.1 in G minor, IV. Presto / Jazz Guitar & Harpsichord Arrangement by Gabriel Cyr
Composer : Johann Sebastian Bach

Gabriel Cyr : I arranged this piece in the context of a creation project in which I explore different instruments less common in jazz. I was curious about the sound of a jazz guitar and a harpsichord playing together. I decided to harmonize and write an harpsichord part for this wonderful piece originally written for solo violin by Bach. I hope you can appreciate the sound of this uncommon duo.

Harpsichord: Marc Roussel
Guitar: Gabriel Cyr

Fading Light - Guitar Solo + Epic Final

Gabriel Cyr : Fading Light is a composition from my band Universe Effects latest album Desolation. I'm very proud of this guitar solo and I hope you can appreciate it! It is slightly different from the album version but still very close.
