Festival des Musiques Progressives de Montréal (FMPM)
Latest News - Concert News
Saturday, 19 August 2006

On Friday September 15th and Saturday September 16th 2006, Montreal will be the host of the first Festival des Musiques Progressives de Montréal (FMPM). It will be held at the Gesù, a 400-seat venue in downtown Montreal.

Our vision for FMPM is to work closely with Quebec artists, promoters and passionate fans to create a friendly, engaging event that will enrich the progressive music scene, by exposing more local artists to more fans, and enabling deeper and more lasting connections to be made.

For the 2006 event, four bands from Quebec will be performing:
Miriodor • Jérôme Langlois • Kaos Moon • Karcius

We will also have two international bands to headline the event:
Hatfield and the North • Echolyn

There will also be a pre-show on Thursday September 14th featuring:
Talisma • Hamadryad

The event's chief sponsor is Musique ProgresSon (ProgQuebec), and we are also sponsored by Unicorn Digital.

In addition to our primary mission of helping grow the progressive musical scene in Quebec and helping Quebec artists gain international recognition, we are optimistic that establishing a stable festival in Montreal will allow more opportunities for bands outside Quebec to come here to perform. This will create a stronger local scene for prog bands touring Quebec outside of the FMPM, and will create a larger base in Quebec of people who are aware of the entire current prog scene and festival circuit (NEARFest, ProgDay, RoSFest, BajaProg, etc.).

Stéphane Desbiens, guitarist for the Quebec band Sense, will be among our guest musicians at FMPM 2006, in support for his latest solo effort, The D Project's Shimmering Light. Come and say hello to Stéphane at the Ipso Facto table in the vendors area, where you can pick-up a copy of Shimmering Light, reviewed on ProgMontreal. Your chance also to see his stunning custom-made guitar, the ASL 304, which gives Stéphane his unique signature sound.
Gary Green, Gentle Giant's legendary guitarist, has been invited as our guest of honor at FMPM 2006. It will be our pleasure for us to have Gary in Montreal for the duration of the festival and he will participate actively in the celebrations! Nathan Mahl among our exhibitors and vendors at FMPM 2006. The famous Ottawa band features keyboardist Guy Leblanc (who played with Camel in 2000 and in 2001). Guy and drummer Daniel Lacasse will be happy to answer your questions about the group, and it will be your opportunity to get the latest Nathan Mahl releases, including Shadows Unbound, the excellent Heretik Vol. 1, 2 & 3 series, and Guy's books.

DVD of Caravan's performance at the Bloomsbury Theatre
The long awaited film of the concert held at the Bloomsbury theatre in London on 7th November 2003 has finally been released, entitled '35th Anniversary Concert'

The concert was held to celebrate Caravan's longevity in the music business- 35 years at that point. There was a wonderful atmosphere at the theatre, with a degree of nostalgia coupled with optimisim for the future- borne out by the stunning musicianship on show. Uniquely, the concert included an acoustic session, although as drummer Richard Coughlan pointed out (with some disappointment), this was the first time that the band had appeared on stage without him! The line up featured Pye Hastings, Richard Coughlan, Geoffrey Richardson, Jan Schelhaas, Jim Leverton and Doug Boyle. Jimmy Hastings, who has appeared on countless recordings, made a guest appearance and as ever was the consummate performer.

Tracks featured are: The Dog, Why ( I wish I Were Stoned), Golf Girl, Nine Feet Underground, Hello Hello (including Geoffrey Richardson on hedge clippers!), Head Above the Clouds, Revenge, Nightmare, Smoking Gun, Unauthorised Breakfast Item, Backwards, For Richard, Memory Lain Hugh, Headloss, If I Could do it All Over Again, Place of My Own, Love Song with Flute, Chaqnce of a Lifetime.

Extra features include the 1973 promotional performance of The Dog the Dog He's at it Again shown on Old Grey Whistle Test (line up of Hastings, Coughlan, Richardson, Dave Sinclair and John G Perry), as well as interviews with band members
