Charles Ives

I have heard a few classical composers on AM that relate to the prog genre,...ie.... Mozart and Beethoven; However, I would like to suggest that a rather unknown composer by the name of Charles Ives might enlighten the inquisitive mind far more than the "mainstream" composers named above...... Ives' Piano Sonata No. 2 (particularly the "The Alcotts" movement) is an excellent compostion..... dissonate and emotional...the trademark of most prog.. Even if AM does not add this to their playlist, anyone interested in THE most significant "unheralded" American Composer of the 20th century should check this piece out...You WON't be dissappointed.

I'd also recommend Ives' "Unanswered Question" and his 4th Symphony.

There is a remarkable passage in the 4th that sounds like 2 marching bands playing different tunes approach and pass and then march away from each other. A truly masteful piece of orchestration.

having very simular taste as the afore posted members, i would be very interested in having Ives added to the rouster. indeed having a few more classical 20th century composers could flesh out the many sides of this genre. i also like the film scores of bernard herrmann.

I think the whole classical thing has been gone over (too?) many times on these pages... as much as many of us like and listen to it, it really doesn't have a place on AM. maybe start a pinned topic where people can list their favorites and recommendations, but let's be done with suggestions for adding it.
it's good discussion material, however!

My reasoning against Classical music on AM is solid. If people would check out old posts before going ballistic, things would be a lot simpler.

There are at least two, if not three old threads where we debated classical on AM endlessly. I made my case against it there. I see no need to restate an entire thread here. So the emphatic NO's sufficed. If you want to read articulate arguments against classical, dig up those threads. Thank you.

I am relatively new to AM...thus I have not been involved nor knew there was a previous debate about classical music here...sorry Yesspaz... I was simply making the arguement that if there is Mozart and Beethoven here, why not Charles Ives whom I consider to have some compostions that have similar structures, dissonances, and chord progressions as our beloved proggers..... Also, pertaining to yesspaz's advice to be nice?...I NEVER put down anyone's music suggestion NEVER...instead I prefer using my energies to support those I want to hear. I feel that the lack of reponses to a suggestion thread speaks far louder than negative words.

artboy, don't stress it. Yesspaz gets a bit intense. I think discussion is always good. some sub-forums for discussion of other genres of music might make it easier... it can be difficult to find older topics of relevance.
btw, I really enjoy your art! it resonates very well. and a terrific web site, also.

Being sort of out of the loop as far as classical (I have Joe Jackson's record, but that doesn't count), I would like to hear this

I knew you were joking RnR....but many DO get the 2 confused as not many know about Charles......He was an incredible American composer of the early 1900's that refused to play the role of a stereotypic composer and did most of his work in anonymity....some of his work is a bit too marching band-like for my tastes...but there are a few pieces that are incredibly complex and worth checking out!...check out his piano Sonata #2...especially the "Thoreau" movement...you might be surprised!
