Nektar / Caravan

I'm planing on attending the September 15th show in Atlanta's Little Five Points neighborhood at The Variety Playhouse.

Attempting to coerce Roger dot Lee to attend with me so I can meet my first (non-related) Moonie in the flesh.

Any other takers?

For the record:

Steady Stan's method of coersion are brutally direct. His ability to convince leaves me astounded.

I'm working on it, Stan, very, VERY hard. I have to convince Mrs.Lee that it'd be worthwhile for me to take a Wednesday evening and Do Something (likely not a difficult chore).

It'd be a shame to NOT see it.

Roger -Dot- Lee, working on convincing Mrs.Lee that I MUST see it....

Go for it chaps.........

You won't be disappointed I'm sure. When Pam and I saw Nektar in London a while back they were superb.

Look out for the new Bass player.

9/12

for me.

Just saw a free show by Orphan Project yesterday so I know I can handle the noise.

Will see them at the Birchmere in Virginia, a sit-down dinner-type place. Nice acoustics - seen Tibbetts, Bob Mould, Aimee Mann, Crimson, Dregs, etc there.

Not a rabid Nektar fan (didn't even know them until I saw them at Nearfest), and Caravan is moderate for me, but I will enjoy the venue and the camraderie.

Meeting Mr. Dot-Lee as a first time Moonie.....hmmmm...not sure which way to go on that!

Rattle those chains Stan!

Yah, no kidding. I'm still working on Mrs.Lee, and since I'm on the new job, I have no feasable idea of what my schedule will be. I'll know better next week, and will respond appropriately.

Roger -Dot- Lee, who'd LOVE to go and hang with SStan...

quick review

not much time....

saw them on the 12th (and Stan is there tonight )..

very impressed with Nektar. I saw them at Nearfest but was way in the back, and also not familiar with them at all. I was real close this time and loved it. They did a song called "Dream Nebula" that Roye described as "never had been played on tour in the States" - it was off their first record, and was magnificent. They closed w/ Recycled and did the Future tune of course (only part one). Their drummer is excellent. He's a bit up there, and conserves energy. But he's like Neil Peart where he gets a lot of power efficiently. I was damn impressed.

They did a newer song that Roye said was off an album that was "a national secret in Europe"

Caravan did a song inspired by an incident at breakfast at Nearfest. I was going to ask Richard Coughlin and Pye Hastings after the show for an explanation (they were accessible), but I chickened out and had to say bye to my friends and had a long drive home. Aaah opportunities lost). The keyboardist (not Sinclair, think he was Scandinavian?) was awesome. They closed with Nine Feet Underground, was spectacular. there was less of Leverton and more of Richardson, and he was awesome. And Pye Hastings was in great form, and the band really rocked out in spots.

All in all what a time.....andI got an appreciation for Nektar I did not have.

The concert was great!

Didn't know if I was going to even get to go until Wednesday. Got out of work at 10:30 that morning, drove the 450 miles to Little 5 Points, a funky / trendy section of Hotlanta, arrived there about 6 pm. Stopped in a Disc Golf store and ate at a great pub down the street. Doors opened at 7; I was able to sit in the first row of theater seats. Caravan came on promptly at 8 pm to roughly 200 people. They had a little bit of technical problems with the keyboard sound early, but sounded excellent over all. Actually came to a stop during the first minute of "Nine Feet Underground" while they fixed a gremlin. They played for about 1 hr 40 minutes. Great selection of songs. Geoff Richardson, the viola & woodwinds player, was excellent, as was keyboardist Jan Schelhaas (also has played with Camel). Pye Hastings' vocals were superb.

Nektar came on after a 30 minute break. It was a bit of a letdown finding out that their original keyboard player couldn't make the tour due to a sick wife. (At least his priorities are right.)Replacement keyboard player, while enthusiastic, was adequate at best. The guitarist, Roye Albrighton, is incredible. I never realized how much he contributed to their overall sound. Played a lot of older stuff, which sounded much better live than on cd. Light show was virtually non-existent, which was a bit of a disappointment, but it was still an excellent performance. They played for 2 hrs 10 min.

After the show, all 6 members of Caravan came out to the lobby, mingling & signing autographs. They really appreciated the response the crowd gave them.

So, even though it was a whirlwind 24 hrs, I was definitely thrilled that I went. I would say Caravan impressed me a bit more then Nektar, due to it being the full band, whereas Nektar, minus the regular keyboard player & light show was a small letdown. But, it was still extremely memorable. Wish you all could have joined me!

I truly wish I could have.

Unfortunately I was at work that night until some time in the 8 pm timeframe and was completely exhausted by the time I got to leave.

Next time. I swear to all present.
