Big Generator
OK. Currently listening to: "I'm Running" from Yes.
After all the great music Yes put out, they had the right to put out "Big Generator" in an attempt to sell as many records as so many lesser talents. But doesn't mean we have to play that album on Aural Moon, does it? Does it? How many listeners would be upset if I pulled most or all of Big Generator from the playlist? I'm quite serious, and your vote does count... |

Big Generator.
Apart from "Final Eyes" and "I'm Running" I hardly ever listen to Big Generator, Jim.
I have no objections to you pulling the other tracks. If you replace them with anything how about the track "Mumps" by Hatfield and the North? |

I gotta put in a veto here. I have a great fondness for BG. Aside from the two tracks released as singles, which we've all heard a million times on the radio, I think there's some good stuff in there.
Call me crazy, but I don't find it nearly as objectionable as "Open Your Eyes" (which I don't think we carry even one track from) or "Talk" Avian |

I'm waiting for Yesspaz....
Open your Eyes is an abomination. Talk is listenable, and I like BG from a "pop" standpoint (I like some stuff like that, that's just me). However - I don't think those three belong on AM. When I have doubts, I think of the great studio cuts on the "Ascenscion" (sp) CD's. Please give them a decent burial. |

Ugh - I was actually thinking of getting rid of the horrendous "Be The One".
I just can't see why people think "Holy Lamb" or "I'm Running" is so much worse than some of the other stuff (ELP's last two albums, EL& Powell, tracks from Abacab, etc )we have on here. Avian |

I like Shoot High Aim Low (or Aim High or whatever the hell it is). As I've said, I like BG, just not that much.
Please carry whatever you want. 99% of your listeners don't care whether you have the latest release by established bands - we're looking for things we can't hear otherwise. Personally, I don't get out much anymore, so I lose touch. Every once in a while Iwill find a band like Minimum Vital, DFA, or Mathematicians that I would have never heard except for friends or AM. Stuff like RPWL interests me, and eventually I will get around to hearing more. Sometimes I will hear an older band I never heard, and I will also eventually test it out. We all have personal favorites and for me, I think bands like Budgie, Manfred Mann, Montrose, Finch, etc. can be real finds for people. Conversely, I like to hear about hidden gems too. Basically what I am saying is please don't worry or wonder why other listeners don't like or categorize some songs like you do. Just put the best product you can out. Nobody is going to have a fit if Big Generator stays on the playlist. OK? |

"Shoot High" is the only song I can think of off that album. Are there actually good tracks on that album? I don't remember. It's definitely their weakest effort, IMO. Followed by... Hey this would make a great thread, so I'll do something about it later.
Before I go, though I would like to say that IMHO, "Talk" was the best album Yes put out in the period between "90125" and "The Ladder." I will admit that it is not very prog, however. Also it was one of the first albums I bought when I got into them (I'm 26), so it was listened to quite frequently, which may skew my perception. As for BG, I won't miss it or anything...

![]() How darest thou entertain the thought of pulling BIG GENERATOR!
"Rhythm of Love" is, to say the least, not my favorite Yessong. Hands down my least favorite Yessong is "Almost Like Love." However, for the rest of the tracks, come on! No, it's not RELAYOR or "THE YES ALBUM, but come on! everytime I here Jon and Trevor hit that chord in the chorus of Big Generator (you know the one I'm talking about), I get the same feeling I get when Jon and Chris hit the same one on "Going for the One." "Shoot High Aim Low" is the best Yessong from the 80s, including ABWH. "Final Eyes" I get a kick out of because everytimg I burn a cd and hit "finalize" that little chorus is in my head. Before the cd burner I was quite fond of that song. And what's wrong with "I'm Running?" Nothing. "Holy Lamb" really whips the llama's a%*, if I may say so myself. ![]() Quote:
![]() You cannot be serious! "Be the One" freaking rules. Man, I'm depressed. I vote to keep BG, keep "BtO," and add OYE (for wholeness' sake - I won't try to argue it being a good album - I think certain tracks are really good though). If I hadn't just requested "Blind Man's Arrow/Letters Falling From Dying Hands" by the Appleseed Cast, I'd go request "Big Generator" right now... dangit! ![]()

Keys to Asc 2 has Mind Drive and Footprints, which are great. Brother of Mine off of ABWH are fantastic. Don't plead your case for a sub-standard record by putting Shoot High as better than those songs. Please. Shoot High is OK - but loses it's steam halfway through.
As I've said, just keep Big Generator around - who cares? But, no Open your Eyes! Completeness? Then just include Calling All Stations or Black Moon, or COME ON!!! Last edited by Rick and Roll : 06-26-2003 at 10:46 PM. |

Won't hurt my feelings if you pull it. But there should be more ABWH material in the library...or am I missing it when I look through the recordings?

I like Rick and Roll's approach...
Keep BG in the interest of completeness. One of the best features of AM is that there is ample material from all artists. Sampling new stuff is, and always has been, the essence of AM. Now while most of us on these forums are well familiar with the Yes catalog, some new listeners may not be. Give them a chance to sample the lesser known stuff. (That can work both ways, those familiar with the 'pop' eighties may not know anything about "Sound Chaser" from Relayer.)
BTW, I didn't listen to BG that much when it came out because I was hoping for more material like the Fragile - Relayer era. But now, whenever I give it a listen, I like it more and more, and its poppiness seems to have matured a bit (as I get older). Holy Lamb is one of my favorite Yes pieces. If you're worried about disk space, we could start a thread about what else might be eliminated. Don't get me started.... |

Wow, what a response. I just wish that was my real reason for making that post!
OK, BG stays.... |

Please explain...
your real reason. I am confused.
Thanks! |

My real reason is simply that I don't like the album and I was seriously considering removing it! However, I try to balance my opinion with what Aural Moon's listeners want to hear.
I wouldn't post just to solicit a response - if I did maybe I'd say I was considering removing all Yes.... |

Ok, I see
As I've said, basically keep what you want, and if there's any clamor otherwise, remove it. Conversely, if there is a groundswell of opinion to add something (you be the judge of what the threshhold is), do it.
It seemed like there wasn't a big push to let BG die. Maybe you could have a separate thread-like thing for this. Or, maybe not........ |

big generator
I heard the album 'big generator', though I am not a listener of AM simply because I'm a new user and I don't have the audio card, speakers and stuff on my PC.
However, I liked the suggestion by Keith. Everytime I listen to the track 'Mumps' by Hatfield and the North I find it hard to believe there can be so much in one single piece of music. As for the Yes album and Yes as a group, when I listen to, talk or even think of rock music I like to make this very simple distinction between two categories: There are 'Rock Stars' and there are simply 'Musicians'. There is music made by Rock Stars and music made by musicians. As a fan and listener of Progressive Rock I'm only interested in the second category. It is my opinion that Yes (in)voluntary opted for the first category a long time ago and their music now can no longer be considered as 'progressive rock'. If AM is a progressive rock radio and is really what radio should be then I don't see why it should play Big Generator or any album like Big Generator at all. |
