The GEPR (Gibratar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock) derives it's name from the mailing list. Mike Taylor conducted a survey on the mailing list to construct the original GEPR. (I think he did a 2nd survey on alt.music.progressive as well) I eventually turned over the mailing list to Mike after running it for 4 years.

When Mike ran the GEPR website, the archives of the mailing list were still available on it. I went to the GEPR site the other day, and there isn't even a mention of the mailing list anymore. Ah well, I guess I'm at least happy that nobody can see the things that I had to say way back then. ;-)

Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics

"Theusz Hamtaak !"

More seriously I think the Scottish band Pallas has very well-written lyrics, and even if they're not as "historical" as King Crimson or Yes lyrics, they're still great. I like the chorus of "Who's to blame ?" a lot:

"Oooh, though the seasons come and go,
Still the sickness seems to grow,
In the minds,
Oooh, though the players names may change,
A simple question still remains,
Who's to blame ? Who's to blame ?"

Pendragon's lyrics on "Not Of This World" are very rich too, especially on the 1st track.

For lyrics that fit more in the "historical" side of the topic, I would quote Marillion:

"But even jesters cry !", "And thus begins the web", "So here I am once more, in the playground of the broken hearts"

Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics

'Heard a voice shouting "don't jump, please for god's sake let me move my car!"' - Suicide? - Barclay James Harvest

Couldn't decide on my favourite Andersonism, many of them have already been said .... have some favourite lines from non-prog songs, but best stick to the correct genre!

Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics

one of my favorite andersonisms:

"A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace and rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace
And achieve it all with music that came quickly from afar
Then taste the fruit of man recorded losing all against the hour!"

gotta love a woman who can take care of business without breakin a sweat!

from jtmckinley on Friday:

"A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace
And rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace.
And achieve it all with music that came quickly from afar,
Then taste the fruit of man recorded losing all against the hour"
-- Jon Anderson, Close To The Edge
(wtf? nonsensical, but I love the imagery and vocal rhythm of it

I thought it looked familiar!

Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics

Andersonisms I like:

"River running right on over my head
Outboard, river, Bluetail, tailfly,
Luther, in time, suntower, asking,
Cover, lover, June cast, moon fast,
As one changes, heart gold, leaver,
Soul mark, mover, Christian, changer,
Called out, saviour, moon gate, climber,
Turn round, glider"

And this classic:

"Suns High Streams Through Awaken Gentle Mass Touch
Strong Dreams Reign Here Awaken Gentle Mass Touch
Star Song Age Less Awaken Gentle Mass Touch
Awaken Gentle Mass Touch, Awaken Gentle Mass Touching"

And finally:

"Starlight, movement, reasons
Release forward
Tallest rainbow
Sun shower seasons
Life flower reasons"

Yeah.

Since English clearly isn't Anderson's first language, what is?

More insite.....

Mrs sharc loves to Harmonize to this song, it is that middle lyric that says so much

In the Meanwhile
The hours seem to fly
With busy days and nights
Take it in your stride
As worrying is interest paid on trouble
Long before its due

Passing through

-STEVE HACKETT

Re: The most important sentences in prog rock lyrics

Gawd, I can't believe I didn't include this in my first post on this thread, but it had to be added...

"Hi! It's me, the girl from the bus, remember? The last tour?
Well, information is not knowledge.
Knowledge is not wisdom.
Wisdom is not truth.
Truth is not beauty.
Beauty is not love.
Love is not music.
Music is THE BEST.
Wisdom is the domain of the Wiz (which is extinct).
Beauty is a French phonetic corruption of a short cloth neck ornament currently in resurgence..."
-- Frank Zappa, The Packard Goose

I gotta agree, music is THE BEST. It's the only MAGIC in the world that I have personally experienced and have participated in. Thanks Uncle Frank.

Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for the lead role in a cage?

I agree Yesspaz, I almost chose those Siberian Khatru and Awaken lyrics myself when I first posted. Damn, it's hard to choose a favorite Yes lyric LOL! But those are right up there for me as well. Yes was such a huge part of my life growing up in the 70s (born in 1964); they were the soundtrack to my mental movies whilst reading all the classic fantasy books like the Narnia books and The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings and others too numerous to list...

LOL. It definitely is "Jonish" KeithieW, he lives in his own world I think, and good on 'im for living there ! It's too bad more people on this Earth don't understand his language, but fortunately there have been enough to allow him to make a living, so thank goodness for that .

Mine might be "We looked around the open shore waiting for something!"

Or perhaps "Where we are coming from or where we go we only know we come with sound."

Love that Random Jonism generator.

To offer at Mercury
To love wonderously beyond Phebes
Heaven forever will be wonderful
Seeker often was shining gently
Saying at heart
To experience through homeworld
Speaker shall wonderously friendly
Joyful certain planet
Under heaven trying happily
Dreaming after seasoned edge
