Gigs attended by Moonies in 2006

Rick posted in a reply to my "Machine" concert happening thread, that too few Moonies post their comments on gigs here in this section.

I would like to know, which gigs you all saw this year, making a personal qualification from best to not so good, meaning that the gig which you post on first place is the one you liked more. If you attended a festival, every different artist is a separate gig..

Here are mine:

1. Frost/Pallas
2. The Flower Kings
2. The Machine Performs Pink Floyd
3. Nokia Night Of The Proms
4. Iona
5. Steve Wilson and Band
10. (because it was way to loud) Steve Wilson & Stiltskin

I hope I did not forget one´for this year...

Re: Gigs attended by Moonies in 2006

So all your gigs got worse as you went through the year??? That's a shame.....

I've been to a lot of gigs this year. Off the top of my head my faves are:

The Moody Blues
Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman
Asia
The Strawbs
The Musical Box
The War of the Worlds
Nik Turner's Space Ritual http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNVX99ReXPQ (Steve and I were standing just behind the guy with the camera)
Never The Bride
The Flower Kings
Darwins Radio
Flamborough Head
Pendragon
Strangefish
The rest of the Bilston Line up
Fragile (with Steve Howe)
Martin Turner's Wishbone

They're the ones that spring to mind. I'll probably think of others during the day but...........

No! I meant a tread where we can go back and edit our gig attendance throughout the year. I'm sure I forgot some. I know it feels like I'm always at the NJProgHouse and I'm sure I missed some gigs there somewhere.

I didn't bother listing the gigs I slept through either!

Could have been worse KW, I've actually suffered Dream Theater / Queensryche / Fates Warning at the Garden State Arts Center in '03.

My ears were bleeding by the end of Fates Warning and I had yet to suffer Queensryche and Dream Theater. Queensryche but at least DT actually played one or two songs below stone crushing volume. It was OK to watch DT play but the openers were just not my cup-o-tea (or pint-o-Guinness which would be more appropriate for me). How do you spell UNDERWHELMED? I did give it a go though a few times. Saw them first open for ELP and Deep Purple Again, with the aforementioned tour-de-ear-bleed-times-three, once for the 6ºs tour (unfortunately, they played little of the 6ºs) and then again as an opener for YES on the 2nd leg of the US 35th tour. They did an excellent rendition of Machine Messiah. Can't say there was much more that impressed me though.

When he's not trying to do the "heavy metal" thing, he's tolerable. He was the best of the vocalists at the ear-bleedX3 gig. The shaved head singer from Queensryche made LaFrenceCheese sound fantastic.

I'm not around much anymore to shoot the breeze so I didn't put 2 and 2 together that you and Peter were together. That's quite cool!

Nothing wrong with a Dream Theater show. I won't go anymore (I've seen four I think) because they're too brutally technical. The last time they played the entire Scenes of A Memory and it was just a bit too much. But I really liked Kevin Moore and John Myung on bass is a treat.

Funny about those guys. Jim Matheos from Fates Warning and Portnoy and Moore formed OSI, Petrucci and Portnoy formed Liquid Tension, Myung was with Platypus, and of course Portnoy with Neal Morse, etc. Quite an eclectic crew.

Anyone who thinks James LaBrie is just a screamer should check out the Ayreon CD he's on. He's quite good. It's just he goes too high on the DT material. That's more of the band showing off.

As for Queensryche, the November show was the entire Operation Mindcrime I and II, with actors. Incredible band. Geoff Tate was well within an acceptable range. I guess he was showing off just to hurt your ears vax but he's very good. That shaved head happens to
some when they get old. They've been around a while now.

Again, glad you liked DT.

Re: Gigs attended by Moonies in 2006

BTW Lotus, I only listed all the bands/gigs. The numbering in my posts should not be construed as indicative of my preference for any act. The number in (n) is the count of times I've seen said act in the calendar year.

That said, I'd rank seeing Mirthrandir(*), Cryptic Vision(*), Pinnacle(*), Lazuli, Flamborough Head and Guapo in my tops. I was fortunate to catch all three of Mirthrandir's renunion gigs. They got better and better each time they performed.

Steve Hogarth(*) solo gig for OXJAM because I got to meet and speak at length with Dave Gregory (XTC).

Of course, I have to mention The Red Masque(*) too because of Brian Van Korn(*).

Partying with John Mitchell and John Beck (Kino) at CalProg until nearly sunrise was fun too. At the end of the night it was only Beck, Christine Holz, Martha and myself and alot (ALOT) of empty bottles.

(*) some bias here as I know these bands, or some of its members, on a personal basis.

Rick and I both attend the festivals. Three of the same festival. Rick went to ProgDay and I did not. I did Baja Prog and Rick did not. The festivals are a great way to catch several bands in couple of days. More moonies should try to make it to at least one of the festivals.

In addition, Rick has Orion Studios near to him; I have the NJ Prog House. Both of these venues are small and offer many of the same acts. I'm a patron of the NJ Prog House because it's a great group of people and a great way to provide an outlet for progressive music.

I'm also situated almost equidistant (about 60 miles) to NYC, Philadelphia and Atlantic City as well. There's a wealth of shows for me because of this.

Well, Ric in my case I'm not sure in my case I'm a stellar example. The festivals are ridiculously close to me - I've yet to attend any show west of Tennessee - in fact I've only been to Colorado, and that's it west of there. And the UK this year was my first. Progday in Noth Carolina, never South. I go to a lot of small shows - I try to track and catch some favorite bands each time, and it's better than watching the tube. Orphan Project for instance, was at a coffehouse nearby.

Now, I did go 6.5 hrs alone by car for Progday and 11 to Gallatin, TN for Salem Hill. But I combined that trip with seeing some old friends in Kentucky and Ohio (and Moses and Nadina also). I also love hard rock shows, and there's always something around.

Vax does a lot of travelling, and will plan trips with shows in mind. That's commitment.

I was able to get that list so quick because it's on the computer.......

I don't bother sleeping through gigs I go to. If they're so bad that I don't want to sit and watch them (Hatfield and the North being a prime example), I'll get up and leave.

This isn't to say that H&tN was bad musically, but they all seemed so wrapped up in their own stuff that they completely forgot that we, the audience, the people who are paying to see them do a SHOW, even existed. If all I wanted to do was listen to music (which, in all fairness, wasn't BAD, but it wasn't all that technically heavy either), I'd stay at home and listen to their CD. They weren't bad, per se, but they certainly weren't all THAT good, and most assuradely not worth headlining over Tony Levin!

I'm not much of a Gig goer myself, primarily because of my back, but also because of the dearth of good prog gigs that even know that Atlanta exists. Making it to Nearfest was a Class I treat (mucho thanks, kudos, etc. to Vax and Mrs. Vax for their hospitality, etc) and I got to meet a lot of Moonies that I wouldn't have otherwise.

Re: Gigs attended by Moonies in 2006

You could say this has been a tough year for me... Yet I was able to attend 3 shows by My 3 Favorite artists. I think the Quality made up for the lack of Quantity.

Rick Wakemans Piano Tour- A one man show in a sleepy woodsy town Hall. I sat 4 rows back from the undeniable Master. Lightning Fast renditions of Many of his Best!!

Keith Emerson Band- The Sat. Night before he Headlined Sundays Finale at Nearfest, He giged his set at ToadsPlace New Haven. Although the place has become bad, I stood 8 ft from my Hero for the entire show. What a View! This show was 9 days after Wakeman- -ahhhhhhhh

Asia, featuring John Wetton - a casino Show. I just loved the Boys. Each had feature time and Wettons Voice was SOOOO good. Book of Saturday Baby!!!
