Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

I have so many albums from Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Lionel Hampton and of course Frank Sinatra; my parents have heard their music when I was born and grow up ...and I like a lot of this Country/New Country stuff...George Strait, John Michael Montgomery, Carrie Underwood, Van Preston...it's perfect for relaxing and a nice contrast to all this 11/8-double-base-demisemiquaver...

I have the Gorillaz disc "Demon Days" and it's actually pretty good. Tracks like "Last Living Souls" and "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead" are well written pop/rock. "Feel Good Inc" is a bit trite, but hey...

And for the record, Abba does NOT rock. I have no problem with anyone liking them, but they do not ROCK. They waft gently, perhaps even pleasantly, in the breeze, but they do not rock. Are we clear? Actually, the drummer from Abba played in a jazz band locally in San Diego in the late 80's/early 90's, and he/it was pretty good.

Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

Among the top-40 CDs in my 14yo daughter's collection, Gorillaz ranks fairly high in my book. (I can't tell her that, of course, or she'd throw it away.)

Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

I've come to the realization since the last time we chatted about this that there are no guilty pleasures...... half my likes would fall under that category anyway!

Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

I'll put one up for now as my brain is on power saver mode.

After reading 17 pages on this thread, and doing a search, I was surprised I didn't see anyone mention the "Greatest band in the land".

Kiss released their Alive! album in 1975 and I enjoyed it as a teenager. but in 2004 I finally had a chance to see them live. One of the best rock concerts I have ever been to. I was able to get one of my sons to attend with me and I do believe he is appreciating the opportunity he had to see them. I love cranking their first studio album leading off with Strutter playing LOUD.

Yeah, back in the mid seventies i loved them... "Nuthin' to Lose, Cold Gin, 100,000 Years, Black Diamond... Watchin You... I stayed with them through '76 and the Destroyer album... ... then moved on.

Just might have to pick up "Alive" again.

But KISS isn't really Guilty Pleasure unless you wear the make-up and heels when you listen.

Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

Good one! I'll have to hide that stuff when you come over.

I always felt in some ways that the over the top theatrical way they went into rock took away from the real recognition they deserverd as some of the best straight rock I have ever heard. When I wrote my post I was basing it on Keithie's examples with Manilow and Motorhead. Having lived in NY state for a good part of my life, I always sensed that the rock music gods had this sense of disdain for Kiss and that they were not considered a "real" band worth of the company of say Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple or any of the mainstream hardrock bands. I've seen many cases where someone said, oh you like them with eyes rolling up or nose snub. To this day I never hear any classic rock station play Kiss. And yet when the circus comes to town it is always sold out. Go figure.

Same here although I never even made it to Destroyer. In fact in the concert I saw they hadn't played watchin you since that time and the crowd went wild. I think if you were to listen to all of their music right up through Psycho Circus you would enjoy it.

Okay, enough of this and back to prog.

Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

this was my wall circa 1976-7. they could rock, and wrote some pretty damn good music. I don't have any on cd yet, because I can't figure out which one (or three) to buy. my budget just doesn't allow for such extravagance!

Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

True confession time. I've lived in the South most of my life, save a couple years as an infant across the seas in the land of Burgandy and Champagne, and 4 years in Siberycuse, NY at college.

Just yesterday I picked up my first recordings of Lynard Skynard, a best of collection. And I'm really enjoying it.

Come on folks - get those lighters out - FREE BIRD!!!! WHOOOO!

But also remember Gimme Three Steps, Sweet Home Alabama, Saturday Night Special, Honky Tonk Night Time Man, What's Your Name, One More Time. Just to name a few.

I was always an Allman and Dead fan and kind of poo pooed the skynard fans as too mainstream. They were the KISS of Southern Rock, if you will. But ya know, they could still rock.

But I think I'll slip into some Captain Beyond to cleanse myself (mostly recorded in Macon, Georgia - home of Capricorn Records.)

There's a great line in Night at the Museum where Ben Stiller is breaking up the fight between the civil war figurines and tries to console the South by saying You guys got the Allman's!. So very true.

I was always impressed by how mythic Skynard was on Long Island. Never really understood it myself but you couldn't miss it.
