On Nuevo Mexico

Hello fellow Moonies.
Some fifteen minutes ago I heard a song by a band called "Nuevo Mexico" on Aural Moon .. The song was "El Mar" from the album "Hecho en Casa". It sounded really interesting to me, so I tried to find some more information about the band on the internet, however, all my searches failed because of the inconvenient band name. If someone out here can tell me some stuff about the band, such as: when they were formed, how many albums thay had/have, maybe some influences or just a general description of their sound/sounds.
Or if someone can just find a link to all this information of course it will do just as well .
Thanks.

Re: On Nuevo Mexico

Beware the Tull comparisons!

Let me put in the caveat that I have not heard this fine record...or maybe I did and was chemically kept from remembering

However,

Every review of a flute-dominated record says "sounds like Tull". I hate that...or Focus - two of my favorite bands that sound little alike!

Many Latin American bands use the flute - one of my recent faves is Flor De Loto from Peru. But they're heavy and do not remind anyone of Tull.

When I read a record review and see that I cringe...it tells me nothing about the band. There were some good points in the reviews...it's just that comparison always bothered me.

Very well said Rick, I second that warning.

Such comparisons often say more about the limits of the reviewer than about the band itself.

How often I've been disappointed in a band because a reviewer heard a bit of complexity in a tune and said the band was like Happy the Man, or Brand X...

Re: On Nuevo Mexico

Yes Marq! I was reading up on the new Combination Head CD I'll be playing this week (oops let it slip out ) and since this one has vocals (the debut did not) it sounds like "Alan Parsons". I didn't think so...

There's only one brand x

I want to hear someone review Tunnels and say "sounds like Brand X"....

Speaking of reveiwers, you'll like this - Iluvatar's "Children" lists Jim Rezek (keys) name as "Kezer Mij". The reveiwer repeatedly referred to the "excellent playing of kezer mij"...dope.

Well thanks for the heads up .. I indeed am a Tull fan and this attracted me, however, what attracted me more was the confirmation that it is a folk oriented band (as was the song I heard .. but could not be sure the whole show was such). So I'll try and find it and hope for the best

Re: On Nuevo Mexico

What can I add since I own the CD? I find it to be a pretty consistent disc in terms of quality; the production is mediocre, but no worse than you'd expect from a niche mid-70's release; I hear some psychedelic / 60's influences (mostly in the fuzz guitar, perhaps in the vocals and arrangements somewhat as well); but definitely a prog album with nice organ work. You can thank my brother for clueing me in to this album - he was in a used record store in San Diego when they were playing this, and he picked it up. He later lost his copy, but I was inspired to find it - I may have gotten it at Laser's Edge, but it's been awhile and I may be wrong. And my review is from memory, so don't hold me to anything....
