Rickter Scale Show 189

airing Sunday, August 3 from 8-11 PM EST and Monday, August 4 from 1-4 PM EST

One more week of trying some different things, clearing out the backlog of discs and some music from a show I'll be seeing this weekend. As was the case last wek, I'll be playing a lot of music from the Cleveland area. All of this, seeing the 3RP in Pittsburgh, and going to Cincinnati on October - I better hide my Ravens gear!

Rick Ray - selections from "The Guitarsonist" (2002):

The Guitarsonist
Dance Floor King
Mr. Cooper
Domestic Terrorism
Dance of the Particles
Of Your Own Design
Guitaren't You Surprised
The Battlefield
The Climb From Sheol
I'm Sorry

Check this out:

30 releases since 1999 - actually looks like 17 in a two year period. I had heard some a few years back but like Zappa, it can be hard to know where to start. Fortunately, I was given this disc and "Temporary World" from my friend Terri...I'll be sure to pick up some more down the line.

Rick does all this and runs a business. Too much on the plate - a kindred spirit

The songs on Guitarsonist move from fusion to Beatlesque melodies to some quirky moods - entertaining stuff. All the instruments except for the Woodwinds (by Rick Schultz) are played by Rick Ray.

Broadview Collective - s/t selections (2005):

It's About Time
Gollum

Two guitarists (Mike Barna and Jeff Charmek) and Paul Stranahan on drums, Paul being formerly of the great Rare Blend. Free form jazz fusion, some tasty instumental work.

PSI (Paul Stranahan's Insomnia) selections (2008):

Mann, Wo Ist Mein Auto?
Question Mark
Sojourn
Who Knows?
Splatt!!

Same two guitarists as above on "Who Knows?", Chris Bober on the others. More in depth than the Collective above, excellent instrumentals.

Thanks Terri!

Extreme - cuts from "Waiting For The Punchline" (1995):

There Is No God
Cynical
Midnight Express
No Respect
Evilangelist
Shadow Boxing

I must really be asking for it..now a Boston band! (another Baltimore sporting rival)...they are releasing their first disc next month since this one 13 years ago. Also, they are appearing on Saturday in Baltimore, and the other two times I've seen them they've been fantastic. Nuno Bettencourt is an absolute monster (as demonstrated on the instrumental "Midnight Express"). Thought I'd play some from this disc.

King's X - two each from "Please Come Home Mr. Bulbous" (2000) and "Manic Moonlight" (2001):

She's Gone Away
Marsh Mellow Field
Believe
Vegetable

The other half of the double bill on Saturday. Now I will be seeing Tull and RTF next week too so it's a good week...

KMOB - "Big Broadcast" selections (2003):

Don't Be Pretty (at all)
Cool Cartoon
The Pleasure's Mine
Dakar 17W 15N

Another Cleveland band....good fusion, not afraid to wank.

Here's a little info:

Next week will bands from the 3RP festival.
