I. After two blaring rockers and one progressive indulgence, Rush was finally ready to get down to business with their fourth album, '2112' ('76). Not only did this album succeed on a commercial level, but it also brought their sound to a whole new dimension.

II. What would happen if all the great classic prog rock bands had a pot luck dinner? Other than Greg Lake, John Wetton & David Gilmour fighting over the pork chops, I'd expect it to sound a lot like Transatlantic. Their first album 'SMPTe' ('00) has definite stylistic nods to many of the classic bands, while infusing it with enough soul to stand on its own.

III. As a part of John Peel's regular BBC show, Pink Floyd's first guest spot in the 70s was held on July 16, 1970 at the Paris Cinema in London. Promoting Atom Heart Mother at the time, this show was their second live performance of the finished piece with an orchestral accompaniment. This show also features the 'never completely recorded song' The Embryo and a live version of If. This is a more complete copy of the show that adds back John Peel's original song introductions. An older version of this show was one of my first concert recordings to stumble across, so this one has a special draw for me, and it's still one of the best I've ever heard.

Ahem! I know that on the LP it's "Atom Heart Mother." However, I actually listened to what John Peel said, and he consistantly called it "The Atom Heart Mother." Maybe this was the original name, but the "The" was dropped before the LP went to press. Tommy, don't you ever listen to your shows.

It's generally "Atom Heat Mother". While you're at it, I want to see you try to change people's mispronunciation of "forte" and the misuse of "achilles' heel" (see George Carlin literature for a discussion on that).

I have a 1970 BBC tape (cassette) that has a Fat Old Son on it too (or is it "The Fat Old Sun")

It's great, much better than the studio version, which I think is kind of lame.

The Transatlantic was cool when I first heard and bought it, but I can't help feeling thay wasted an opportuntiy to be really good.

And while I think Fly By Night is just as "prog" as Caress of Steel, I won't complain and be glad you're playing the great "2112".

the live version I have is very slow and excellent, and is about 20 minutes long, with a wicked Wright solo in the middle.

I see your point about this version being like the Dead. Too much like the record.

Digging this though....never was a rabit Floyd fan so I'm enjoying the old stuff.

I'm not the one eating crow!!! Working title! The working title was "The Atom Heart Mother" which means at that point in time, it was THE AHM. Besides, go read the original post. Read it and ask yourself, "does he seriously believe that there is a "the" missing?"

At the time it was a working title -- taken from a newspaper headline.
Do some research. THE was dropped. For a lack of any better title for
the composition, PF stuck with AHM.

There is also no significance to the cow on the cover. PF wanted the
cover to be something "not psychedelic". How it came to be that the
cow was finally chosen escapes me but I'm certain google can help you
find the answer to that question.

According to Storm, he just saw the cow (Lullabelle III) and stopped to take the picture. I think it was a fairly random occurence.

The newspaper story was about a mother with a pacemaker who delivered a child. This BBC performance was actually the second performance. The first was at the 1970 Bath festival.

There's another I have, which includes the orchestra and choir for AHM that's actually much tighter than this. However, even with a looser feel it's better than the album version. Ick.
