365 days of the meow

oh, sorry, thought I was in the prog trivia thread

Anyway, that's a great record. Year of the cat, on the border, flying sorcery, just excellent.

Oh, great ROCK songs.

Al Stewart? On Aural Moon? I don't think so, but what say the peanut gallery? (and I mean that as a term of affection, not derision)

I like "Year Of The Cat", for rational and other reasons (remember that line Rick?), but I don't think I'm going to add it.

"the fishing boats go out across the evening water
smuggling guns and arms across the spanish border"

memories indeed!

The brits 2p worth...........

I've liked Al Stewart for years. Year of the Cat is a great album but I don't see it on AM at all.

If we do that then we'd have to add bits of John Martyn (Solid Air) and David McWilliams (Days of Pearly Spencer and Livings just a state of mind) all great, thoughtful and well rounded songs but on AM? Not in my humble opinion.

I'm sure others will disagree and I would like to know why.

I've been known to change my mind in the past..............except about bands with "!"s in them.

Im not really talking Year of the cat(I always liked Lord Grenville myself).Im just saying there are some very very good music IMHO more pre than post Year of the Cat.I think the post stuff would be Russians & Americans and Last Days of the Century.I think he would fit in here fine and would add to AM more than take away from it.Give some of his older stuff a chance you will see he is a Good musician(also Peter White is a fantastic gutarist he also plays almost all other instruments as well) and a very good writer. I just thought he would be a nice add to AM is all. heres a link to his stuff.

Obviously some of you haven't heard the Past Present & Future album. There are two excellent prog tracks there-
Nostradamus and the incredible "Roads To Moscow". It's a story song, very engaging. Some of the best mellotron you'll ever hear by Wakey. For you jazz buffs, some great guitar by Peter White. A haunting masterpiece.

alright, I'll bite. I'll try to check out the PPF album.

I see Francis Monkman also plays on it - there's some hope...

damn 30 second clips. just can't get a true feel for a song.

I still hear folk-rock-singer-songwriter, not prog on PPF. Sounds like a damn good album though. So, I may pick it up next time I do a massive buy, and see if it fits on AM. Sounds good enough to add to my collection even if I don't add it to AM...

let's get ready to ruffle!!!!!!!

Ok, please read carefully -

I do not agree with Jim that having Francis Monkman on a record holds hope. If that were the case, then Foreigner and Bad Company would be on Aural Moon (given their lineage).

However, Al Stewart is worth a look, and that's what is occuring. I do not find Alan Parsons' stuff after I Robot prog, but it's here.

I've been withholding this until now - some of your additions are not really prog, just as some of my suggestions (such as Manfred Mann) are not too proggy in places.

I point out bands like Appleseed Cast - seem to me kind of Indie (if I had to label it) - sort of reminiscent of Phish (which I really don't agree as AM-style, but it's here so OK with me). Another artist is Tony Palacios, who is just a good guitarist. A lot of Frank Gambale and all of Satriani and Steve Vai is missing (who can be very proggy), yet Palacios is here.

For those reasons, give Jim a chance to stick his toe in the water on Al Stewart. Also, I really don't think Al gives a hoot about us anyway!

Whatever

Whatever Jim decides is okay with me. Remember, I'm one of those folks that always saying add song by song, with the exceptions of certian artists who should be here manditorily. So, if there are Al Stewart songs here and there, fine, I'm cool. The idea just strikes me as funny. I tried to get Jim to add one particular England Dan and John Ford Coley song. No dice. So I guess to clarify, I'd be against adding all of Al Stewart's stuff wholesale, but not against his ten proggiest tracks or similar....

I'm pleased to be sitting with Rick on this addition...though i haven't heard near enough of AL to really impress me, but i like the his voice...still as Yspaz says whatever Jim deems addable I'll welcome.

well, I bought PPF and it's a fine album. I'm considering adding the two specifically mentioned songs and waiting for feedback. I still get primarily a folk-singer-songwriter vibe, but those two songs are pretty cool and have some proggish embellishments. It will be a bit of a stretch, but hey, that's what we like to do...

micheal-

great album! i wish he would've
continued on this course instead of
veering off into "radio friendly"commercial music.

"road to moscow" was worth the price
of the album alone.

This post made me buy 'The Year of the Cat'. I always wanted that record, but never got it. Found a used copy at a reasonable price. Great album. Thank you for the post Michael. Even though it may not be prog, talking about stuff like this in the forum spurs impulse buying.
