Interzone - April 26, 2005: Time Capsule II - 1978

Hello,

Please join me for another week of Interzone. This week we’ll be opening The Time Capsule, going back 27 years playing music from 1978. The Time Capsule shows will focus on various music all released in a particular year. However, generally I will be avoiding some of the more obvious selections and focusing on a mix of somewhat obscure music from that time, hoping that even experienced listeners will find something new of interest.

By 1978, progressive rock was essentially becoming an afterthought in the mainstream. New popular art forms like disco and punk were taking over the airwaves, and left little space for epic symphonic rock.

However, there were still bands throughout Europe emerging in the late 70s playing music in the tradition of progressive rock, many of which became classics. Happy The Man released Crafty Hands. The supergroup UK released their first album. National Health gave us Of Queues And Cures. Grobschnitt released Solar Music Live. Jethro Tull released Heavy Horses. And Rush peaked with Hemispheres.

So if anyone tells you 1978 was a bad year for progressive rock, mention that list. If anyone still needs further convincing, have them listen to the next three hours. There are lots of gems here.

- Cozy

PS - Playlist to come.

Say on Brother!

I wrote a very goofy article about how King Crimson's Discipline ushered back the prog that was dying....prog never really dies, the musicians keep changing partners...

this show should be excellent!
