Negative requests (please don't play "Band X. . . )

I'll say it again, we need a way to allow listeners to deprecate certain songs and/or bands. Much as I would love to blow my wad requesting a single song every 90 minutes or so, sometimes I would much rather listen to what others are requesting and VETO some really obnoxious bands that I don't consider MUSIC let alone prog.

Lately I've been seeing a lot of Roxy Music. Not that they're bad, but what are they doing on this site? Can we get Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark or Thomas Dolby or Big Country? I would hope not because those groups are not really "prog". So why is Roxy Mediocre Music getting so much air these days?

As for bands that should get univers zero time, how about removing lame nonprog "noise" bands like...
  • Henry Cowpie
  • Godbarf! You Black Emperor
  • Matching Molasses
  • Univers Zero
  • Oysterchowderhead
  • Caravan
  • Magma

Let me apologize up front if this offends some fans of these groups. I don't intend to attack you for liking this "music", but I really despise this stuff. When I log on to Aural Moon, I want some relief from the noise of the day. I think if there is something on the playlist that a majority of AM's loyal listeners find offensive, we should remove it from the list or restrict its playing to 4 to 10am Pacific Time (or some equally ungodly hour).

I hear you, I think the trick is keeping the deselection democratic... (not that it needs to be, but)

join us here: songs that make me switch...

Re: Negative requests (please don't play "Band X. . . )

This is exactly why I've been tuning out negative feedback on my show, if presented in this way. If you don't like something great, but others do.

Your mention of Dolby is amusing, since I played three songs on my show two weeks ago. I've also played Big Country. You see, the Moon is full of different styles.

The inherent weakness in you stance, is that you cannot define prog. For my new company, the co-owners did a sort of interview with me about internet radio, and asked me to define prog. I couldn't. Go to Wikipedia.....

and check out their attempt at a definition. They also note that Robert Fripp despises the term, and I know (because he's the closest thing I have to a musical idol) that Ian Anderson is amused by the term.

I can't define it, you can't, nobody can, musical icons hate it, so just stop trying ok?

Queen, Rush..great bands..prog? Maybe, probobaly not. Who gives a shit?

So ok you don't like those bands..I don't like Univers Zero, GYBE, etc. But they're on the Moon, I deal with it. Why don't you?

And your inclusion of Caravan is very odd. they're a whole different sound.

I will say your names are quite funny, esp the Molasses.

I could go on all day about the music on here that's not prog, by strict definition. But I'm not going to present it in this fashion.

Re: Negative requests (please don't play "Band X. . . )

I think what's interesting, and I bring it up just for discussion, is that one of us might suggest something for the moon, and decision is made whether it fits or not, but we can't use the reverse to select material that we think doesn't fit.
I'm happy with the way the moon works, but my other thread was started to have just this sort of conversation (although without the vituperance of DodgerMatt).

Basically for Aural Moon it comes down to what Jim feels is appropriate. I trust his judgement, and it's his station. But there's no strict laws of prog applied.

Presently he has Tool - Lateralus he is considering (that I sent him). I know it's prog, but it may be too heavy for what he feels the Moon can handle.

That's the only criteria here. the playlist really isn't a true measure of prog. But it's more inclusive than not, and that's a good thing!

yup. I hear you. and I definitely agree with the inclusivity, even if it means I have to turn the moon off once in a while...

Re: Negative requests (please don't play "Band X. . . )

FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How many tracks do we have on Aural Moon?????

I think it's over 18,000. A vast majority are Prog, some are not but SO WHAT????

You don't like a track that's playing? Then go make a cup of tea!! This is a free service (for you) given with the dedication, effort, love and money of people who do it as a hobby.

Frankly, if all you can do is whinge about it then go somewhere else... OK?

Aural Moon is not just about music, it's about a family. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong but at least do me the honour of telling me why.

I see a few tracks mentioned here that probably amount to less than 20 minutes out of 24 hours...........get a friggiing grip, eh????

Man you guys piss me off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Jove, I do think I like this bloody Brit. Give 'em what for, Keithie

Wish I had a request, cause I think I'd like to dedicate a song to Mr. Dodger:

"I remember back in the day
Music folk had a lot to say.
Now I sit, hope and pray
someone'll come along and show the way.

When all else has been done and said,
along comes Mr. Oysterhead!

He's an inspiration to us all."

None of the bands you mention are likely to be removed from Aural Moon anytime in the near future. Sorry you don't like them, but many listeners do. There are 2 factors that determine what plays on Aural Moon and what doesn't. Number 1 is what I think is prog. Number 2 is listener comment. I've added and deleted songs and bands based on listener comment, but in those cases I was more on the fence then I am on any of the bands you list. If I am sure a band is or isn't prog, it doesn't matter how many people chime in for or against. If I'm on the fence, then the listeners decide. All the bands you listed that you don't like are definitely prog in my opinion, so they stay. Hope that doesn't offend...

See, it's the Director and Owner's job to be tactful. The rest of us only have to be if we wanna.
