Survival bag
So, the end of the world is nigh, but, thankfully, in the spaceship ark, along with 10 million frozen embryos, there is room for one representational track from every progressive band that has ever put finger to mellotron or guitar....ONE track which sums up the essence of a bands entire existence! The world waits, the asteroid draws steadily nearer...you have to choose...
....millions yet unborn depend on YOU! ![]()

Pink Floyd - that's a toughy. All reverence given to Alan's Pyschedelic Breakfast, of course, I'd still have to go with Meddle's "Echoes."

Re: Survival bag
Hmm no piano and no acoustic guitar...hardly a sum (although my fave ELP track).....
then i thought Karn Evil 9 maybe...still no lake guitar... speaking of Tarkus, that may be one of the more lifted pieces of music in prog..you'll hear elements of Tarkus in a lot of songs.... |

You make some great points - then what about "From the Beginning" by ELP or "Take a Pebble" - they have both of the elements you mentioned.... Ted |

Re: Survival bag
ATOM HEART MOTHER Why? Because it's rife with all the excesses of progressive rock sensibilities: it's a long radio-unfriendly composition; replete with backing choir and orchestra; has great uplifting melodic parts as well as dark and dissonant parts; chock full of quirky and spacey interludes; lead motorbike and broken glass parts; just when you think it's concluding, it's not; fabulous production qualities (thanks to Mr. Parsons); recorded in Abbey Road Studios; and hated by all the critics! It's Pink Floyd at their most experimental stage, IMO.

Thick as a brick
You put your bet on number one and it comes up every time. The other kids have all backed down and they put you first in line. And so you finally ask yourself just how big you are -- And take your place in a wiser world of bigger motor cars. |

I think either Yes' And You And I or their Heart of the Sunrise. Both songs sum up Prog Rock in a clear, concise fashion.
