List your top 5 prog albums-newer

I want to get into some newer Prog artists. For me, this means over the last 17 years! I love Yes, ELP, Renaissance, Genesis, Moody Blues, etc.

I've been listening here, and so far I plan to buy stuff by Niacin, Porcupine Tree, Ozric Tentacles, and Spock's Beard. What are your 5 fave Prog albums that have been released since 1980?

Thumbs up

Only 5?????

Off the top of my head it would be (in no particular order):

1) Yes - Magnification.
2) Moody Blues - Strange Times.
3) World Turtle - Wilderness of Eden.
4) Ozric Tentacles - Live Underslunky.
5) Pink Floyd - Echoes.

I know the last one's a bit of a cheat as it's a compilation but I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anglagard - Hybris

Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory

King's X - King's X

Porcupine Tree - In Absentia

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime

For all the Appleseed Cast fans out there, you might want to check out Serene (the band of a college acquaintance of mine). They just recently released their debut on Arena Rock, and have a similar style to Appleseed Cast (though less adventuresome).

Since 1980?...ho boy...

King Crimson - Discipline, Beat, Three of a Perfect Pair, the new EP (Happy with What You Have to Be Happy With, and get the new CD next month - it's going to be one of their best).

all of the Anglagard albums (new one due out this spring!)

Porcupine Tree - first four albums

Glass Hammer - lex rex, On to Evermore

Any Djam Karet album

Any Anders Helmerson

Gordion Knot albums

The Flower Kings - first few or so albums

Spock's Beard - latest ("Snow"), maybe a few others

Anything involving Kevin Gilbert (Giraffe, Toy Matinee, solo, others)

Ozric Tentacles

I'm sure I'll think of more...

Great New Prog

Here's a list of some great stuff, excluding the bands you mentioned:

I.Q. - Ever (1993) (concise, catchy Neo-Prog)

King Crimson - Thrak (1995) (their best since Red, IMHO)

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - f# a# (infinity symbol) (1998) (very avant-garde, but really cool)

The Flower Kings - Space Revolver (2000)

Marillion - Anaraknophobia (2001) and Misplaced Childhood (1984) (great albums from the late and early Marillion eras)

Galleon - King Of Aragon (1995) (awesome keyboards; inspired by Rush and others)

Transatlantic - SMPTe (2000) (the best prog supergroup of the new millennium, but alas, they are no more)

Anekdoten - From Within (1999) (the heaviest band I've heard to come out of the Swedish prog revival of the 90's; influenced by King Crimson, but excellent for non-heavy fans too)

Citizen Cain - Serpents In Camouflage (1994) (Genesis inspired symphonic neo-prog with a vocalist sounding very close to Peter Gabriel)

Djam Karet - New Dark Age (2001) (astounding!)

Somnambulist - Paranormal Humidor (2001) (Crimson-style heavy prog, absolutely awesome! My #1 album of 2001)

Hamadryad - Conservation Of Mass (2000) (My #1 album for 2000--killer stuff!)

Ayreon - The Universal Migrator, Part 1: The Dream Sequencer (2000) (unbelievably great musicianship suited for the staight-prog pallet; if you can handle prog-metal as well, pick up Part 2: Flight Of The Migrator (2000))

Chroma Key - You Go Now (2000) (excellent album from Dream Theater's original keyboardist, but it's not prog metal--more like progressive pop)

Enchant - Blink Of An Eye (2002) (newest--and best, IMO--from this heavier band inspired by Rush)

IZZ - Sliver Of A Sun (1998) (a wide mix of styles keeps this band from ever getting stale)

Vulgar Unicorn - Under The Umbrella (1995) (jazzy progressive rock with very long tracks--superb!)

Well, that should get you started. You ought to find at least one thing up there that you like. Happy listening!

Oh yeah, you should own all the Mike Oldfield albums (excluding "Heavens Open") up to Tubular Bells III. The highlight is "Amarok" from 1990

sweet

It's good to see some other supporters of the great Appleseed Cast and King's X. Two votes are better than one!

newer prog, in the footsteps of giants, including some old giants themselves.

Anglagard - Hybris
Tony Levin - Pieces of the Sun
Illuvatar
Lemur Voice - Insight (kinda metal-ish)
Dream Theater - Scenes (also kinda metal-ish)
Any Djam Karet
Yes - Talk (I know, it's not 'classic' Yes, but I like it.)
Anything with Roine Stolt guitar work
Therion - Deggial

oh, yeah...
Porcupine Tree, Fish, Marillion...

Gee, I hope some of you don't have to count for a living!!! The idea of FIVE was to narrow down to your very favorites. Thanks for the input (excessive though it may be...)

limit my response?

If you asked my students (I'm an engineering professor), they'd tell you that I've never been able to curb the length of my response to ANY question.

On the other hand, I expect them to get the numbers right!

Another one of life's little dilemmas.

Oh, yeah, I forgot
Arena, Almost Autumn, After Crying, Buckethead, Hamadryad, KBB, Lana Lane, LeOrme, Nathan Mahl, Ten Jinn, Spektakel, Symphony X, Yes' Magnification...

Yeah, but you (clactdj) said you wanted to get into newer prog, and there's too much great stuff out there to limit it to 5. Out of all the suggestions, I bet you find 20 that you wondered how you ever lived without!

Any chance of adding this album to the playlist? I understand it's one of Zappa's most progressive albums.
